Running a V8 on Ethanol E85

I have just finished fitting an Ethanol kit to my V8 - E85 fuel is available near to me for about 80p a litre, so the incentive is quite strong....

The kit is supposed to be a simple install, involving unplugging the fuel injector plugs and plugging in the kit in series with the injectors. On the BMW V8 this is impossible due to the plastic housing that contains all the injector wiring being mounted onto the top of the injector plugs. So I decided to bite the bullet and wire the kit into the cars loom. At the point the photos were taken, I was wondering if the car would ever run again.....

Well, I got it all back together, over 50 soldererd heatshrinked joints later, and it fired up and runs perfectly with no warning light on the dash! Phew. Next tank of fuel will be 66% E85, after that will be trying 100% E85.

I am now getting the hang of reading the RAVE wiring diagrams too

Will keep you posted as to how it goes....

My priority throughout the install was to preserve reliability, and although it took the best part of a day to do, I think the install is better for having been hard wired in. In this way, the vast majority of the kit and connections are in the controlled environment of the ECU housing. I was even able to use existing but unused grommets to keep everything sealed and watertight. Time will tell if I have succeeded!!

How about the fuel lines and seals as i thought that was of concern as well for strong Ethanol mixes? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
Mantec Sump Guard, Rigid Load liner, MY10 BT upgrade.

Any vaguely modern car should be OK regarding seals etc., certainly any post 2000 car. Conventional wisdom dictates that the fuel filter should be changed after about 1000 miles of running on Ethanol as it can free up deposits that have accumulated in the tank and fuel lines which then clog the filter. My car is on a bit under 70K miles so probably a good idea to change it anyway - not found out the price yet though!!

I'd possibly suggest a cheap inline clear filter before the main fuel filter so you can see whats coming out. Plus with 2 clamps they are easier to change and its much better to see whats happening without taking things to bits FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's
