Why take a 25 kg wheel and tyre for a ride everywhere ?

Manufacturers manipulate quoted MPG figures enough already and the missing provision of a "proper" spare wheel is one way they reduce weight and gain better MPG !!!!

Weight reduction = better performance and efficiency

Granted it will only make a small difference but over 3 years at 10,000 mile per year it all adds up

...but, it wont make a difference on a fullfat..... ... - .- -.

well thats told me so I will now carry 5 spare wheels/tyres as it makes no difference to my fullfat and 3 spare GM gearboxes as well

Note :- ALL weight reduction WILL make a difference - I am not saying it will be 10/20/30 % saving BUT it will make some difference

I used to travel with my FF almost entirely stripped out of rubbish and odds and sods and then when i went offroading i carried;

The normal spare and a spare with an MTR on it,
5 Waffle boards
Portable air compressor for the tyres
2 small toolkits with hammers and sockets
2 towing straps with 4 D rings
an extra spool of rope
warning triangle
20tonne bottle jack
3foot breaker bar for the wheel nuts
spare air and fuel filter
roll of packing wrap film
3 spare sets of clothes
decent amount of food and booze, about 5-10litres of water in various containers and plenty of snacks
2 good waterproof jackets
2 fleeces
sleeping back
karrimat
tent
40litres of extra fuel
wellies
walking boots
sturdy outdoor trainers
and some other bits..

When i compared the 60mph jaunt along the M56 with that lot compared to a few days after but still wearing the MTR's there was only 1 difference....

so Dave, what you are saying is that my wife who weighs 65 kg will get better mpg than me weighing 110 kg .. ... - .- -.

Given that a spare wheel weighs approximately 1% of an empty FFRR I'm with Stan on this.
In practical terms carrying a spare wheel won't make a blind bit of difference to fuel comsumption.
