Oil leak 57 tdv8

Hi guys & girls, decided after owning a few classics & a rather troublesome p38 that I would get a ffr, but at the end of my first months wonderful motoring my engine has developed a major oil leak. It appears to be coming down either side of the gearbox where it mates to the block & is obviously at the top somewhere. What is strange though it does not leak until you select drive or reverse ? I would add it had an oil & filter change last week but I have removed the top cover & it is not leaking from the top of the filter housing. Any ideas would be appreciated & guess I will now be a regular!! Mike

i suspect it could be some overfill for the oil change running down the engine block.. ... - .- -.

My experience

Queried a minor leak or leaks and a smouldering/hot oil smell with my main dealer for months and was assured all was in order, including the prospect of overfill/ excess oil left over from main dealer servicing work. It could be exactly that with yours or maybe something else.

I ended up getting under the car and taking photographs as per the attached link/post because it was obvious something was leaking.

In our case, the upshot was I took the car to a recommended independent specialist who immediately detected leaks as follows (the car has since spent 2.5 weeks at the main dealer having the leaks fixed):

• Oil Leak - Engine - visible via discharge out of under tray holes. Replaced the front offside driveshaft seal.

• Oil Leak - Front diff - diff was weeping/ had a teardrop type leak. Replaced the front diff pinion seal.

• Gearbox Sum Pan - Oil leak. Visible/ sump and surrounding areas looked wet. Replaced the gearbox sump seal which involves draining existing oil, replacing with new oil and putting a new filter in.

Yes this is so bad it will need to be recovered but I cant see on top of the box whats let go, mine has the zf 6 speed auto in it & I wonder if its a cooler pipe split but not easy lieing on your back & you cant see down the back of the engine from the top

I would add it looks like engine oil though

In our case the specialist identified at least 3 different sources of leak by inspecting the car from underneath on a ramp but he said that the only way to confirm matters was to strip down, for example, removing engine components to determine the actual source of the 'engine oil leak'... And so the car went back to the main dealer for further inspection and repair.

I am very lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it. The oil filter housing which is also part of the oil cooler which sits in the "V" has at some time in the past been repaired with silicone. I doubt the main dealer would have done this given the amount of effort required to strip it out & at only £206 + Vat for the part I would guess the independent who has performed the last three services has a guilty conscience!! So it should be back on the road for the weekend. Very Happy

I've got a 57 Tdv8 had the same. Went in for Rear diff leak, found cv joint leak. Walked out lighter of cash but fixed and under warranty.

Have now replaced the oil filter/cooler housing in the middle of the V & all nice & dry. Took about 8hrs to do & needed a few extra seals & o rings as the egr ones were a bit manky but all done now. Hope it will be oil tight for a while now lol

I can only put it down to an increase in oil pressure or vibration
