2010 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Alaska White
does oil suction work on TDV8

considering buying a suction device such as Pela / Sealey etc. great reports on other forums on other cars but cant find any views on here. some engines apparently are not suited as there are engine bits in the way when you stick the suction tube in the dipstick hole.

anyone used on TDV8?

dont know about the diesel...but used one on mine once,,,no problem
cant see what would be in the way of the "dipstick"..... the end of the pela is only a dipstick with a pipe on it in reality free use of "RSW" all comms to anyone nearby

You would need to measure what comes out to determine whether you manage a full sump drain or not. Some engines are not suitable for this method of draining, I know certain VW Passats caannot be done with vacuum pumps as it leaves a substantial amount of oil still in the sump

I can't see how this would get rid of the gunky stuff at the bottom of the sump that normal draining would flush away. I would have thought draining from the lowest point would always be preferable. Previously..

has anyone actually used one on TDV8?

the wiki suggests that using the drain plug will cause a tsunami of oil. i suppose if even 90% was removed using a suction device it would make the drain plug removal afterwards an easier operation.

I often use a vacuum pump for draining oil and if you get the suction pipe correctly placed you can extract over 99% of the oil

which model would you recommend for TDV8?

is there a restriction on the tube diameter that can fit down the dipstick pipe?

it seems that a bigger diameter tube would be better

I use one on my TDV8 - The 1st time I used it I took the sump plug out to see how much oil was left in.
There was less than half a litre

FYI doesnt the RR and other LR products have baffles in the sump that could cause issue with this?

IMO the oil service hatch is easy to take off and having one of those 99p buckets from B&Q to drain into gives plenty of surface coverage for when the oil comes out.

Just have the bucket set so its as close the opening as possible with more of the buckets catch area to the rear so it gets it as it shoots out but leaves enough for when the flow calms down if you get what i mean.

Or pay nationaltyres or the like the tiny amount of money they ask for to do it and watch them like a hawk Smile
And if they want to charge for sump cover just take it off before you head over as its a 2 minute job if that Smile

Don't know about the TDV8, but earlier today I used a Sealey 6.5L vacuum pump on my TD6 and removed just under 8 litres of oil out of the engine. The oil I removed was a cheaper 5w40 synthetic I had previously put in to flush the engine prior to draining the rest via the sump plug, replacing the filter and putting in Castrol Edge.

A vacuum pump is really useful for a quick oil change between the normal oil and filter service interval. I've used the Pela one's before; the Sealey is far better but more expensive. I also use the Sealey on my wife's car for 'intermediate' oil changes.

Mines a Sealey unit, it is a slow process I've never timed it - I just make sure that the engine is hot, set it away 1st and by the time that I've changed the oil and air filters it's ready to fill back up again.
I bought mine a few years ago for a different job after seeing one being used in a franchised Jag workshop. It works well on almost every car I've tried it on except a BMW530D and a Citroen something I can't remember.
Can't fault mine, it's way more convenient than rolling about underneath and as I change the oil and filters every 10K I don't believe that any old oil left in the sump is going to cause a problem.

Might work on a 3.6, but definitely won't on a 4.4 TDV8 as it doesn't have a dip-stick.

Wouldn't use one on any of my vehicles due to the reasons mentioned above 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

A Sealey vacuum pump is still a great tool to use when you need to change just your oil between normal oil and filter service.
It's a great tool to remove the majority of your oil before removing the sump plug and draining the rest of the crap out for a full filter and oil change.

I'm a fan of the vacuum pump; obviously for garage use. Smile
