TDV8 Gearbox

This is a debatable question but @ 120k miles should a TDV8 gearbox have its fluids changed to preserve its life? Or should it be ok? Range Rover SC 35th Anniversary 2006

I would follow the manuf service schedule. if its sealed for life then it Depends on how long you are planning on keeping it and the mileage you do. If your planning on keeping it 5 years and doing 50k then change the oil. If its only a year or two then personally I would leave well alone as there are several horror stories following g/box oil and filter changes.

Im pretty sure that LR now recommend a oil and filter change on the TDV8 box at 100,000 miles. I would check with them directly on that though as i cant remember where i heard it from. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Master Technician at an LR UK main dealer told me that face to face a few weeks ago (gearbox 'service' should be done @ 100k miles)...

I was thinking if I still have my car at 100k then I will give it a treat and change the gearbox oil. But at the current rate that will be at least 3 years from now so the car might be 10 years old --- it could be its birthday present. Anything else to plan for ? Very Happy Geoff

The cost of the filter and ATF is not that high. The official recommendation the dealer in the Netherlands gave me was 100,000 miles (160,000 kms). I would feel better to follow Craigs advice as the cost of a new box or a refurb job is a lot more than the cost of 3 filter/ATF changes in 100,000 miles. Just to be safe.

I have read many cases for not changing oil etc. (engine oil not ATF), I have also seen what happens to a gearbox when the ATF is not changed in time and it is all BS.

The oil is subject to thermal and mechanical loads in the engine and gearbox. Now crude oil is made into "usable" derivatives (petrol, diesel, engine oil base etc.) by cracking. Cracking is heat and mechanical load. So in actual fact your engine and gearbox are slowly breaking down the oil molecules to short molecules, changing the physical properties of the oil/ATF. So over time it changes (deteriorates) into a different type of oil. Hence the need to change it. As to when the deterioration has gone "too far" is very difficult to determine but my feeling is, stay on the safe side as the consequences of being too late can become quite costly.

To answer the OP question : I think it is high time to change no matter whether the box had an easy life or a hard life. It is past the manufacturers recommendation anyway.

Note that this is my opinion and not based on extensive and solid research or anything, just based on something that approaches common sense and conjecture. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

What's the ball park figure my local indie says they don't do it, as might make it worse and they don't have the equipment.

I watched wheeler dealers when they fixed a boxster auto gear box by changing the filter and new ATF oil, sump off etc..

Given the probs I have had with mine I am considering it as a preventative measure but am worried over the tales of accelerating failure Worse things happen at sea! Well thats what swmbo said when WRENS came to sea!!!

Ball park figure should be between £250 & £500 depending on the indie...

We have repaired several Land Rover products in the same way Wheeler Dealers did the Porsche... It really does work... Thumbs Up

What's the worry with this? What could possibly go wrong with changing the oil and filter?
