I had this problem - battery was dead. Bought a new battery as old one wouldnt charge, prised off one of the side indicator repeaters on the wing, disconnect it - expose a short length of the live feed, attach a wire between this and the live on the battery, earth it and after about 20 - 30 seconds there was enough juice to open the door. Full write up is on rangerovers.net I really didnt think it would work but it did and I'm not that technically minded (if I can do it anyone can). Just re insualted the exposed wire and popped the side repeater back in. I now have a towbar and electrics so just have a spare plug that I can connect to a battery if it happens again.

Well the AA turned up after about 90 mins and as I went outside I pressed one of the remotes, hey presto lights flash and doors unlock. Repeated locking, unlocking (with drivers door open) several times and no problem. Car started first turn of the key, battery checked and said to have a full charge. Locked at home last night, unlocked this morning plus several tests and all ok so I guess a random fault or some kind of interference.

As I only bought the car on Friday from a dealer I have told him about the problem with the manual lock so that he can fix and also look at the rear camera which only works when it wants to.

If the dealer is not interested in the lock any idea where to start looking for a fix or do I have to buy a new unit from Land Rover? There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Robert, the door lock is a common problem on the FF , you can find out how to fix it via the forums search function..

Is this the fix that I need?


DO NOT TAKE THE DOOR CARD OFF, do not touch the door card, there is no need to remove it, only remove the outer handle and lock and reset the cam to the central position.


Open the door and look at the back, there is a grommet, remove this and it gives access to a torx bolt, remove the Torx bolt and the handle comes off. The lock assembly then lifts out and you have to realign the part that's left inside the door. Just use a screwdriver to do this and reassemble.



When you look inside you will see a slot similar to the either image 1. 2. or 3.
below, the slot could be in various positions depending on how it popped









Using a straight blade screwdriver gently reposition the slot until it is like the image below





Carefully refit the handle, Torx bolt and grommet and test to ensure it is working There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

if you put the key in the door lock , turned it and the door didnt open then the cable running from the outside lock to the inner mechanism is broken, this means a door card off and the cable replaced...
i gather the inside door release handle works then that cable is ok...

I can open the door using either the internal or external handles. The problem I have seems to be with the lock (key in the door) that does not do anything when the key is twisted in either direction. The car does lock using the remote or the button on the dash, just don't want to be left with no manual ability to open to the car if the remote plays up again.

OK lock removed no problem but I could not find the screw shown in the instructions in the door. Photos of what I had out

I could not see the screw to check alignment but just put the lock back in and tightened and it all works. Not sure if just loose. I would ideally like to check the screw's alignment in case of further remote problems if anyone can be more specific where I should be looking. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

I've tweaked your image, if you look at the area in the yellow box it has a slot that should be in the vertical position before refitting the lock.

As your lock is now working I would expect because of some fluke you managed to align the slot properly. Worth checking with the key once a month or so that it still works properly.


My take on this fault is that the key is only used in emergencies and usually stiff as a result. The owner in a blind panic to enter the vehicle shoves the key in and does not know which way the partially seized lock should turn so starts applying it a bit of muscle and the lock pops out of the slot.

If it's working now you have it aligned properly, no point stripping it down again

mines done and working now, i could see where it had been put back peviously that they hadnt alligned it ad it was sitting in the foam liner, works a treat now
