One side effect of taking out every fuse is that the lights in the door mirrors now sometimes come on when the car is unlocked although not every time and not for long. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Are the two sockets that don't work only on when the ignition is on by any chance?
If so they are switched on by a relay mounted on the rear fuse board.
From what you describe I doubt the relay has developed a fault but you never know.
As others have said, most probably a fuse but unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram for your year of car, I presume it is a touch screen?

Hmm, I've got a couple of questions, just so I've got everything clear in my head.

1. The front cigar lighter IS working?
The rear (in the boot) accessory socket IS working?

2. The front accessory socket (in the centre cubby) is NOT working?
The rear cigar lighter is NOT working?

3. Do you have a towbar and trailer socket?
If so, is that working?

It may be a case that you have a dicky relay, that's not powering the front accessory socket and rear lighter socket.

Yes the two that don't work used to only work with the ignition on (like the front one still does)

1. Front Cigar light IS working (charging my iPhone and radar detector)
Socket in the boot IS working fine

2. Neither the socket in the centre cubby or the rear cigar lighter are working

3. I have a factory (I think) tow bar and twin electrics but nothing to connect to it so have no way to test if it works.

Is it possible to swap the relays around as a test to see if it solves the problems and if so which ones or where can I get a replacement to try. I have a selection of relays for my E32 BMW 7 Series if any of these might work. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

The relay to look at is the Trailer Socket Relay (R252) according to the electrical manual, this has a switched connection to the two affected sockets. I'm not sure where that relay is situated, as the manuals don't give info on relay positions, type, number, etc. (typical LR!!). Wont be able to look in my girl till the morning, as it's pitch black outside now.

This is the relay position in pre-touch screen cars, chances are it's the same one in your car.
You should be able to swap any of the adjacent relays to try.

Thanks, if mines looks like that I will try and swap 1 and 2 around tomorrow. If it works are relays dealer items or can I get anywhere. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Relays from any motor factor, just get one exactly the same.

Just been out to my girl and had a look in the rear (mine's a touchscreen 05MY), the fuseboard and relays are different.

There are relays numbered R1 to R10 and they're not as per the pre-touchscreen layout.

I'll get a photo in the morning and post it up to hopefully assist you.

This is the rear fuse box on mine. Anyone know which one is for the 12v sockets in the centre. Manual says not to remove relays??

While looking at the relays notices this wire loose anyone know what it connects to or if it for an option I don't have

I also noticed a small purple plug taped to a bunch of wires in the centre console (similar to the one that connects to the HDC switch) but can't see anything to connect it to. Was very tight to the lo do probable not connected to anything but just thought I would check. This is under the cupholder /ashtray near the centre cubby. There is a difference between knowing your sh!t and knowing you're sh!t

Rej,

The pictures tell a thousand words!! Hang fire on changing the relays..I've noticed a couple of things, you may have a different rear fusebox layout to what's shown in your manual.

I'm gonna do some digging on Topix, to see what fusebox and relay layout you've got there. It could still possibly be a fuse issue.

Hi Rej,

Right, think I've found out what's happening.

Your rear fusebox has a similar layout to that shown in the 2008 model handbook. If you look down at the right hand corner of the black box below the fusebox, there's a sticker showing the fuse and relay numbers and pictorial descriptions.

The two fuses to check are the two 20amp fuses at the top left hand side of the lower side of the board. These are the fuses (designated 17 and 18 in the handbook) that protect the Front Cigar Lighter and Rear Accessory Socket, and the Rear Cigar Lighter and Front Accessory Socket respectively. Fuse 18 (the second one in from the left) may have blown.

The relay that controls the rear cigar lighter and front accessory socket is R2, the second relay in from the left above the two 20 amp fuses. You could try swapping that one with R3 the relay next to it on the right (controls the heated rear screen, amongst other things), but only do so if the numbers and letters on the top of the relay are identical.

Hope this helps, but if no success, I would advise getting an auto electrician to look at the wiring.
