If the gearbox wasn't to be used for speed reduction and slowing down, and if the FF's gearbox can't take it, then Land Rover wouldn't state in the off road drivers manual about using low box and 1st gear on steep descents. The gearbox is more than capable of handling it. After all, i'm sure we've all dropped a cog or two and floored it !! Especially in an SC.
A far cry from double declutching and cadence braking in my old lightweight !! Whistle
