Coolant tank bleed procedure?

Hi,

The coolant expansion tank on the SC lost coolant last week via the tank bleed screw that had inadvertently been left insecure (I'm satisfied that there is no coolant leaking from any part of the system and that the bleed screw is working properly).

There is also enough coolant in the expansion tank, the coolant is sitting nicely within the tank range fill markers and the engine is not overheating.

However, once the car has been used, the coolant ends up distributed within the coolant tank, as pictured below, a concentration of coolant settling in the pictured top right chambers of the tank. Then, when left overnight, the coolant has not drained out of these chambers back down into the main tank (i.e settling again between the range fill markers). In fact, it only drains back down when I remove the coolant fill cap and then open the bleed screw.

Can someone please advise on the best step by step way forward for me to try?

Thanks.

Coolant settles like this even after sitting cold overnight:

Thanks very much Stan.

It's just that last year when I had an issue with the bleed screw not being air/ water tight (solved with PTFE tape) once I'd topped up the coolant and bled the expansion tank, the coolant would, when the car was cold, settle back down between the range fill markers, which would seem normal and obviously allows you to check that the coolant is at a sufficient level; but if the coolant stays up in that pictured top right chamber, it becomes difficult to visually check if you've enough coolant, if that makes sense?

I remember mine did this as well. I guess that last year the bleed screw may still have leaked a tiny bit, causing the air to go in and letting the coolant settle. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Well, almost one week after discovering the lost coolant and it hasn't lost a bit more. Definitely occurred because the bleed screw hadn't been closed properly during recent garage work. So, the PTFE tape around the bleed screw is a solution to any bleed screw missing an o-ring Thumbs Up

Coolant tank still showing as pictured above though with coolant, suspending itself in the upper chamber unless I open the filler cap and the the bleed screw when engine is cold which only then results in it draining back down and demonstrating the level is between the range fill markers. Although noted the comment that this is nothing to be unduly concerned about.

ps.. Don't know how to rotate picture from the iPad but every picture I post from my ipad on this forum now appears upside down!

Thumbs Up
