Prog Trans Failsafe as soon as key in ignition

Hi just picked up a 2003 TD6 with 170K on the clock, I ve just notice that when I turn the ignition on the it say Prog Trans Failsafe. Now this is before I even start the car.
When I start the car it disappears and drives fine, yesterday it did bing once came up on the dash then disappeared again, but its always driven smooth with no clonks !
According to the paper work i have, the gearbox was reconditioned at 130k, so really the the box has only done 40K !
Battery was replaced few months before I got the car, battery did go low the other day as I forgot to lock car and light was on, but the message was there before that.

Has anyone had this happen before, seems more of a electrical issue.

I used to get this on my 2003 TD6 too. The regular "bong of doom" used to drive me mad!

Assuming your battery is definitely OK, I removed the Transfer Shift Motor, put 12V to it and let it run for 5 minutes. This is probably not considered "best practice" but as the TSM looked like it was shot there was nothing to lose. It ran fine after that!

When you put the key into the ignition, the vehicle senses the voltage / resistance at the TSM and looks for the correct readings for High / Low and Neutral. So if your battery is anything other than tip top, the readings are wrong and throws the dash fault.

So it sounds like a new TSM may be the answer. If it were me, I would let it run for a minute or so and review the situation again. 2006 4.2 SC

Ok thanks, TSM definitely seem like a possibility, I did try putting it in low range earlier and nothing happened !
I will try again later and see if anything happens

Nice approach SKOT Thumbs Up

Worth a try given a new LR Transfer Shift Motor is something silly like £1400 !!

@ jackvine

the TSM has to come off the car to run it on the bench, there are some youtube videos about this or check the wiki for removal .

Well looks like battery is the Issue, Halford a year ago has fitted a Bosch S4 85AH, I left it on charge for 24Hour and still not fully charged!
Now I have all the lights lite on the dash, air suspension inactive ! ABS Light on and HTC light so need to reset them !

I have ordered the correct battery 110AH rated so should sort a few issues !

Batteries are a funny old thing - Pretty fragile.

When I bought my TD6, the very first thing I did before even driving it was to buy a new LR battery. Then I later had a new OE alternator and hedgehog so in theory the electrical system should have been tip top.

Yet I still had the HDC Inactive, TRANS FAILSAFE PROG, AIR SUSP INACTIVE etc. etc. on a regular basis.

There was next to no current draw when it was asleep so I am still convinced to this day that the "new" battery was iffy......... 2006 4.2 SC

Well I have a new Varta battery to fit, but not had a chance yet, but measured the Bosch after a run and it was sitting at 12.2V so Im guessing its on it way out, as the alternator charging voltage is 14V.
But I think I also have a faulty transfer shift motor, as I can't shift into low range and the error codes read sensor short to 12v.
Will remove it tomorrow and see what I can find

Yeah thanks seen them already, I sprayed the bolts with Plusgas tonight so I'm hoping it will only take 10 mins to remove tomorrow.

OK fitted new battery and removed motor.

The battery was a easy swap and the new varta was at least 6" longer than the bosch but managed to get it in ok.

The transfer motor was easy to remove, I run it up for 5 mins seemed to work ok, checked the resistant on the potentiometer and seemed ok. Fitted back in and started car, and it moved in to low range ok but then would not go back into high. So I removed it again all worked fine but moved it a fraction before putting back in car. This time when I started I heard it move back into high ratio and now no warning message when I start !

So my conclusion is that the potentiometer has a dead spot in it where it normally sits, I've not tried putting it in low again, but will try and locate a good used motor, as it definitely has a issue!

Went through cleared loads of error codes, I think most were due to the low battery volts, only one I'm not sure was transmission reported brake signal error ??
