Ignition key turns then 'click' - no start

Had a call from my wife yesterday, she thinks our RR's 'Drain your Bank Account' chip has gone off again Big Cry ! Seems that when the key is turned in the ignition switch (its a 2003 BMW Petrol) there is a 'click' and nothing. Turning the key again starts the car.

We had a new starter motor about a year back fitted by a Land Rover Dealer, so dont suspect that, I initially said 'battery' but she's insistent that it isnt!

Any ideas??

i had the same for around 6 months after i first had the car, key in then click, second time it would start as normal
battery tested ok ,
found a drain on battery( ob11 port flap was open so kept some of the ECU's running )which helped but did not cure 100% the click on first start up
run the battery flat one day Censored about with the FBH , they never seem to recover after going flat
so changed battery for a 110A varta never had the click since
might be as simple as new battery required, it worked for me

Wife booked the car in for next week, the dealers suspect the starter motor, which, if that is correct, its only lasted a year!!

My car has done this consistently over a two year period without any problems. I've never given it a second thought as it always starts second turn.

I had this a while back - turn the key and a 'click' - intermittently - retry and it started.
New starter motor and [touch wood] no problems since....

Just had the wife call saying she has had the no start issue again after a year off. It's a 110 battery, new alternator and regularly used. The rac said he had never seen a battery with only 2% charge which was regularly used. He said it is normally a relay that stays open but diagnostics would not show it up. It is only apparent when it is playing up.
What is the deal with this. How do I try and fault find the dodgy part as although the car is under LR select warranty they never have time to trouble shoot. Anything I can do. We currently carry a 90a battery in the boot but perhaps someone has a trick to diagnose it or try and catch it next time it does it.

Had something similar myself recently which turned out to be the positive connection on the battery had risen up so was intermittent on giving a full belt of power.

Probably not the same issue as you, but worth having a quick look. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

Strangely she said initially the radio, etc worked then park brake fault/release park brake message (or something like that) then everything went dead... '96 Volkswagen Polo 1.4CL - SOLD

I also had the radio switch itself off a couple of times and a random fault or two, so certainly worth a look. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

Got the car back yesterday, they could not find anything wrong with the switch or starter motor, BUT the battery was not the correct one for the car, it was down by 100amps!
It was fitted last year by the outfit where we get our tyres from!

So, my feeling that it was the battery was correct Very Happy

Glad it got sorted. Batteries rarely fail but sometimes do. I just put my second Yuasa in the B-King, not sure if it was a drain or not. Since my battery tender lead came in this week it is now hooked up permanently Smile

If you can find a volt meter that plugs into the ciggy lighter socket you can keep an eye on actual voltage (even if they are not very accurate you get a feeling for what the voltage is doing). That way you can find out if there are funny things happening, like the alternator starting to fail for example. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Interestingly I had a similar issue on my old p38 range rover and I eventually traced it to the cable from the alternator to the starter had internal corrosion and the first try when it clicked moved the cable and effected a circuit and over time it would settle in a position with not enough circuit cured by putting new lead in £6 from local factors so might be worth seeing what is being delivered at the battery not what is being produced by the alternator
