First trick is to clean the gearbox linkage underneath the car with WD40 and then covering it in grease. That seems to resolve a lot of these type of issues. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Mine did exactly the same, a few squirts of WD40 on the linkage underneath and it was sorted in seconds.
