Solution to damp in ECU's - cheap and simple, for a change!

Hi all..

After the monsoon we had here Friday night the FF generated some very weird faults after 5 minutes of driving Saturday morning! Everything from EAS/HDC/ABS, Steering Angle Sensor, even Central Locking faults! After clearing everything with AllComms and restarting, nothing has reappeared, thank god! However it did get me thinking about potential causes and cures...

Last year I had some issues with water ingress, damp ECU's and electronics, never did really work out where it was coming from, replaced the boot seal and cleared the sunroof drains, all other seals looked to be in good working order. Anyway, I've just purchased some 'car dehumidifiers' from ebay, sounds much more technical than it really is, all they are is simple fleecy sacks filled with colour changing silica gel, I bought 2x large (900g each, able to absorb 600ml of water) and 2x medium (450g/300ml). I'm going to chuck a large one in the rear left electronics area, another in the boot well (to stop my LPG tank and electronics from having an issue), a medium one by the body control module under the passenger seat and another behind the AV display on the dashboard...theory being, for £20 it can only help, and after a month or so I can pull each sack out, check the colour and see if anything is getting damp.

Ultra simple and very cheap solution...I thought you might be interested!

Matt

You should run the A/C once a week to stop the seals drying out and cracking, if you don't use it you'll loose it, refrigerant gas, wot did you think I meant Smile Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I thought the official advice was to keep the a/c running all the time to keep the vehicle dry. Question 2012 5.0L S/C

its not 'official' advice but it helps if you have a water ingress problem and as said its best to have it running every so often to lubricate the seals.. ... - .- -.
