strange engine/induction noise

After the "full air treatment" I noticed that my td6 developed a higher induction noise. Actually, a MUCH higher induction noise, especially when cold and under full throttle.
Suspecting that the performance filter was the culprit, I installed a "normal" Bosch one and that improved things, at least in the lower frequencies.

Unfortunately the noise is still there: it's like a constant hum (reminds me of a cow), which is worse when cold, when under full throttle and under 2000rpm. When on full throttle, at any rpm, it seems that the engine is inside the cabin!

This noise comes with a high frequency vibration that can be felt through the steering wheel and cabin floor.

All of the above happen with transmission in D. When in neutral nothing of the above happen, even when revving the engine with full throttle like an idiot.

I know that a td6 is very tractor-like, but mine didn't sound like that when I bought it in October. Roberto

A noise like that is usually caused by something in the wrong place, the engine is isolated from the body of the car to prevent vibration, if some part of the engine is touching the body then it could cause your problems...

Could also be a failed engine or gearbox mounting, I'd also get the drive shafts and prop shafts checked for worn joints as these can cause vibration if worn....

There are lots of things that that could cause it but they are the easy ones to rule out.... Pete

I think that the engine mountings are out of the equation: if they were failed, I should experience noises and vibrations even in neutral, right? As I stated, when in N the engine is noticeably quieter and no vibrations are transmitted through steering wheel or cabin floor.

Therefore, there must be something going on in the transmission compartment.

Car's going to the specialist indie tomorrow for the Italian equivalent of MOT, let's see what they find. Roberto

When put in drive there is a torque effect on the engine and box, if the mounts have failed there is the chance that the small movement in the engine could make it touch somewhere and create the noise...

Hopefully the garage can give it the once over and find the problem...

Good luck with it.. Pete

Hmmm... interesting...

After lunch I opened the bonnet in order to check oil level, and noticed that the sound deadening panel fitted under the windscreen (over the engine) has fallen: more precisely, the inner part of it is loose, while the outer one is still properly fixed with its two screws. Also, the inner part touches the end of the engine and shows clear signs of abrasion.

I'll figure out a way to fix it and see what happens before giving the car to the garage. Roberto

Alright, I spent some time under the bonnet. Put the insulating panel back in plae and checked that nothing is out of place. Still, I get mid-high frequency vibrations through steering wheels, pedal and transmission.

Before I send the car to the shop (I want them to check the vacuum pipes that operate the engine mounts) does anyone have the part numbers of engine hydraulic mounts and transmission mounts? Roberto

Thanks Stan Thumbs Up

Didn' think it was still working... based on my experience with MB, all of the russian catalogs get cloed on a daily basis... Rolling Eyes Mr. Green

I just want to get the OE manufacturer of those components... it's quite easy to get them at a very cheaper price here. Roberto
