19" winters

Just checked the tread depth on the 19"' wheels currently on the disco, they are getting down to about 3mm ish which I wasn't expecting so will need doing fairly soon.

The plan was to fit these with actual winters when the wranglers had worn out. I know there has been some debate as to the usefulness of winters in the uk, but as I have another set for each car with summers on then this seems as good time as any to actually buy winters.

I have spoken to the chap I use for my tyres in burton, and he can get me wintrac 4's, Michelin alpins or Scorpion winters in 255/55/19

I know that the vreds are well regarded but are they better/as good/comparable to the Michelins or pirellis? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you're not sure, how about these - Then decide when you get back from the Alps ?

Michelin Alpin are very well regarded, and do very well in all the winter tyre tests.

The advantage of the Vreds is the price, and also, they don't seem to mind being used all year round.

I don't think there's a bad choice to make of the three you mention.

Emailed the seller of the tyres above, no response......

Have opted for a set of 19" Pirelli Scorp winters, so will have to suffice with the 19" on the car for the rest of the winter (oh hardship Rolling Eyes ) but will report back after a few 1000 miles to see how they are faring. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Well that's a revalation....

Have put the winter 19" on the car today and the car feels completely different. The steering feels lighter at slow speed, the ride is softer (as expected coming off 20") and it's just feels a bit smoother. Looking at them the sidewall seems softer than the wranglers, slightly more squidgy, have upped the pressures slightly to compensate.

This is on the scorpion the scorpion winters. Had a good look at the miches on the 20" when I took them off. There is a good 4mm left on them all and they are wearing evenly which is good news! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
