Red Diesel

There's a garage near me that sells red, and I was there this morning getting my MOT done. I couldn't believe how many people were pulling up and filling plastic drums Shocked

Talking to the guy that owns the garage, he reckons loads of people are at it now, especially in these hard times. He said Customs & Excise used to sit across the road taking number plates, but even they don't bother now.

this is garage forecourt pricing. If you have your own tank and purchase from a wholesaler (as you would your heating oil) and order minimum 1000 - 2500 litres you will get a significant discount - was around 50p litre. All depends upon your location and proximity to the oil refineries.

Also never ever put it in your FFRR - Customs and Excise have in certain areas got more power than the Police -if they catch you it would be like Hannibal Lectern at a faggots tea party. Vehicles get crushed without a second thought, further more they love the expesnive vehicles because they are worth crushing. The cheaper £200 vans that are caught seem to get away with a fine - it costs more to dispose of these than the vehicle is worth. All this came from a local farm worker who does know the score!

I'll "third" what Vogue said.

I've been pulled over before by Customs and VOSA at a check point. They take a sample on the roadside and do you then and there.

There used to be a regular trap on the A460 at Featherstone and one on the A52. They'd pull any truck or car that looked like a diesel and test it.

I may be wrong, but I have heard that the forensic markers they put in red diesel (you can't just filter out the dye anymore!) can be persistent in your tank for a long time. They don't need a full tank to nick you, just evidence that you've used red diesel at some time.

I suspect that they'd have a weak case if they found "evidence" of previous use. What about if like me, you've just bought the car? Who's to say that someone before me hasn't used it?

You're probably right, but you wouldn't have much of a case if you'd owned it from new!

unless you do have a legitimate cause to use red diesel - i.e. off the public highway!. The only thing is any trace of red and you have had it! only way out is to drain your tank and re-fill with white.

I can confirm that red diesel DOES NOT stain your tank - it only leaves a trace in your filter and can quite clearly be seen through fuel sedimenters, but it won't stain metal, glass or plastic. Personal experience through using red for legit uses in tractors - off the public highway.
