hi,

I really like the matt finish on the leather steering wheel, and noticed already a slight shine on the edges of the leather where it meets the wood. So I find myself trying to keep my hands on the wood and avoid touching the leather.

What I'm trying to avoid is the whole steering wheel leather going shiny. Whilst this hasn't happened yet, it happened to my RRS (bizarrely after a valet?! god knows what they put on it) and it was never the same, so i'd like to avoid it if possible.

Is there anything you can do to the leather to prevent it going shiny? And if it has started to shine, any way of getting the matt finish back?

Any expert advice / tips would be great

Bizarrely enough Tim i thought the same thing the other day... I fitted a brand new wheel to my car some months ago and the same thing as yours started happening to mine! So, the other day i cleaned my wheel using a “flash fabreas” multi surface cleaner my wife uses and......... “Voila” immediately back to matte again.

Must be a small amount of dirt? Cleaning cloth still appeared clean though

Perspiration or natural oils from hands rather than actual dirt?. John

I use Gliptone leather cleaner , and then finish with Gliptones conditioner on my wheel . Seems to do the trick and smells glorious !

Hi I always understand early shine on steering wheels is down to dirt and sweat. Wipe regulary with a micro fibre cloth and hot water this seems to return the wheel back to matt and like new. On older steering wheels it is the leather it self which has 'shined' up and therefore you are limited to what can be done.(keep wheels clean and they don't shine up !)

Be careful using leather products, as they can leave a film on the surface of the leather which - you guessed it will go shiny over time.

I have adopted the above approach now for several years and on works as on new cars and keeps them new. exactly as said above. a friend used to swear by very weak APC (all purpose cleaner) cleaned off with a damp cloth. once the greasy layer is on and the leather shined up even a TFR will only work for a few days.

PVC Frame solvent cleaner will make it dull again  Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Best product I have ever used : Leather Ultra Clean (diluted 50% with water). does exactly what you (and I) wanted.

used it again yesterday and give the leather its brand new feel.
