Steve thanks for the pics of what your experiences have been. That is the kind of finish I was hoping for. All the comments have confirmed I am not being too fussy, hopefully I can resolve this with the company concerned.

Well I emailed my formal complaint last night to the wheel refurbisher outlining why I wasn't happy and sent him the photo's at the top of this post and asked him if he would either have another go at re-furbing the wheels or refund my money. This was his reply.

I have found that people who have to tell you how long they have been in business usually are actually convincing themselves that they must be good as they have been doing it a long time.

Just because he's been doing it for 15 years doesn't mean he's been doing it right.

Looks like they were just painted over with very little prep and some of the new finish peeling off already. To some extent you always get what you pay for, i.e. it would be unfair to expect the same job from a mobile unit in a van as from a location where wheels are dipped to remove all the old finish and then powder coat. That said £300 for 4 wheels is not a cheapo job so I would expect at least the surfaces that show to be smooth and present a newish like appearance if not as new. Backsides and inner surfaces are possibly different as not visible and therefore arguably ok to finish to a lower standard (i.e. a van jobby may normally only works on the front).

Provision of goods and services act 1979, whereby you expect an acceptable standard of work consummate with the amount paid.

I can confirm that this was not a smart repair or man in a van set up. It was a dedicated wheel repair company with all the facilities to dip and beadblast the wheels. I asked for as much care to be taken on the back of the wheels as the fronts, I was shown a BMW wheel that was absolutely pristine as a demonstration of the workmanship they were offering and was happy to proceed on that basis that I would get my wheels back in the same condition. They had the wheels for 2 weeks so plenty of time for them to process, I didn't hassle them as I wanted a proper job, I called them once to just double check that all the wheels I had given them were ok in terms of no hairline cracks or substantial repairs needed and to check they were not going to ruin the new finish by banging on some wheel weights and were going to use stick on weights.

Thank you - I have done exactly that and he replied with " Dear sir, unfortunately I do not agree with many of your comments. I have been in this business for fifteen years and have never actually met someone who expects perfection out of a refurbished wheel that costs in the region of 10-20 percent of a new wheel. I am not going to argue as my time is better spent on customers that we can please." So my bank are now looking into getting a refund out of him. Regards Darren |

I personally wouldn't be happy with the finish. I'd also expect the back of the rim to be spot on too - I hate the 'you can't see it so we can cut corner' attitude to workmanship. I know a very good alloy wheel refurbisher in Dorset if you don't get any joy (not exactly local to you but I know the owner personally and can vouch for his work) |

From the photos the front looks ok and are all the defects on the back ? If that is the case I can well belive that 99% of people would accept especially if you collect the wheels on the car. However if you specifically asked for the backs to be paid attention to and assured they would be as new then no its not acceptable and as said above its certainly not a cheap price. Plus the fact you are offering him the chance todo them again to the agreed standard so don't know why he thinks your after a dicount.
