Hello,

I'm in holidays in Algarve with my wife and my 2 year old baby girl. And today I went to make surf in a beach with difficult access in a natural park. I changed the height of the suspension to high and when I was going downhill I was surprised by the sound of air scape from the front right suspension. I suspect the airspring is old and maybe the rubber is cracked and the air escaped. Then when I get off the car the front right of the car was down. I set the suspension level to normal and apparently solved the problem the airspring went normal. In the return way with the bad terrain I listened again some air escapes and after that the message "air suspension inactive" the car now is parked with the front face in low level. I don't have the IIDTOOL I can't clear the fault code. I'm 600km away from home and I don't know what to do.

I think my choices is to find some Land Rover authorized garage to fix and will be very expensive!!! If I was in my hometown In Porto I will order from island 4x4 the airspring and send to my Land Rover mechanic to fix it!

With this symptoms the problem is the air springs or could be other problem? if I had the IIDTOOL and reset the error, there was a chance to solve the problem temporary and take the car home?

Do you have any lights on the suspension panel in the center console???? or are they all out... Pete

After I got the message on the dashboard saying Air suspension inactive, the lights get off! I can't change suspension position. Ex-FULLFATTY now downgraded

Your a bit stuck then, it needs a hard reset with a diagnostic tool, it may then come back up and be OKish at standard height, sounds like the hole is under the fold so sealed when at standard height...

If not it's a new bag....  Pete

Anyone ever tried this for resetting Fault codes?
Can't remember where I came across it but it applies to 2002-2005 cars.


Resetting ALL Defect Codes

Ignition key must be “off”.
• Press and hold the Check Control button in the instrument cluster (RIGHT button), and turn the ignition key to the first position (KLR).

* You will first see "Check Control OK", some seconds later you will see "Test Nr.01"
* Push the left button on the instrument cluster to see the car's identification number. Add the 5 digits (not 6) together and write down that number, you will need it for unlocking all the functions. Example: A123457 will lead to 2+3+4+5+7 = 21
* Push the right button until you see "Test Nr.19"
* Push left button until you see the number that is equal to the one you calculated above
* Push right button again
* Using the left button select 21. Reset all defect codes
* Press the Right button to select.

Do you have to stand on one leg and face east as well.......


never seen that mate.... going to give it a go but mine has no faults at the moment (hope you were sitting down there!!!) Pete

interesting

I think you'll find that relates only to the OBC info system and not any other ECU's.
i.e. the reset faults will only reset the OBC.

It's standard stuff on BMW's from that era.

From what you say I'm pretty sure you have a holed airbag and as Haylands says, it's holed where it's normally not exposed so won't leak until you raise it up, mine was the same. I would get someone to reset the suspension and keep it at standard height, if it holds then you might want to risk traveling home like it and then you can replace it using your local garage.

Unfortunately it was a hole in the balloon. I went to Land Rover authorized garage here in Algarve and they will replace it! One front airspring.

You were right reseting the fault codes on the dashboard only resets the OBC! But I tried!


I think I get the car in 2 days !!! Waiting for the airspring from Spain

Good news then!

Just to add the front air springs are combined with the damper into a strut therefore they should be replaced in pairs unless the opposite side is relatively new. You can get kits to just replace the airbags on the front (Arnott) but it's not worth the hassle if the dampers are old anyway.
I replaced both my front struts when one air bag became holed, they were the original struts from new so had lasted over 12 years and 100k miles so the dampers were due a replacement anyway. The opposite side airbag was in similar condition to the holed one I replaced so it wouldn't have been long before it was holed too.
I suggest when you get back home you get the opposite side replaced.

The rear airbags can be replaced individually as the dampers are separate, again though, if one is looking deteriorated the opposite side is likely to be the same.
