Hello all

I've had all the post purchase jobs done on my 2011 AB and paid to have squeaks and rattles traced and silenced in the cockpit. However the dealer can't get rid of a ticking noise which seems to be coming from the air vents (both sides) on the dash. It's pretty silent up to 40 mph but then picks up ticking which increases in noise and frequency- worst at 60 mph +

Any ideas what it might be? The dealer stripped out the plastic under the outer windscreen to below bonnet - I can take it back at £110 per hour but wondered if there are any recommended people/garages on here who are good at locating rattles and dealing with them

I have a 2010 I acquired recently, on the test drive I had a similar noise. Before I picked the car up they had put in a new O.E windscreen as they put the noise down to poorly fitted replacement screen that was not an O.E screen. Maybe worth checking

OK, good luck tracking it down

Might be a long shot but on a P38 I had a few years ago I had a similar annoying rattle from the vents which I tracked down to dried leaves in the air intakes. Bit of a faff getting into them through the plenum chamber but sooooo worth it in the end!

Update -

Just had the windscreen lower plastic trim replaced by the dealer as it was warped to sort the problem but it's still ticking. It's from both air vents but now only appearing at over 50mph. I had a poke around the engine bay today and the plastic bit in the middle seems a bit loose and has a clip missing. Not sure if a replacement of this might do the trick. Any views/advice? Ta Roy

Is it possible you could fold a piece of soft cloth like towelling and trap it in place on the suspect plastic by trapping it in the bonnet closure, just to eliminate one possibility that it may be rattling. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20

that's the Pollen filter access hatch. It looks like only one of the catches for it is located correctly.
Push the hatch in a bit, and use a small screw driver to lever up the catches so they sit in the groove on the front of the hatch like the others.

It might not be your problem, but it wont hurt to do it.

Thanks for that - I will stuff a towel on it tomorrow as long as I don't cause any damage to the car .... Will then try to fix it with a screwdriver as suggested.

standing on a tool box helps, dropping it to access height also helps.

i've got one of those 2ft high hop step things, which is really handy.

And Star Wars is great too....  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

When you say lower plastic trim , do you mean the cowl ?
If so, they broke it putting the cabin filter back in .

One way to find out if it's wind noise getting in is to tape everything with masking tape .
But I use 3m electrical splicing tape , as its black and doesn't look all that bad when you're driving around with it around your windscreen for months on end

Thanks for the tips guys. Looking forward to taping things up tomorrow morning to try it out. The car has had this annoying tapping sound since I had it 25k miles ago and it's the make or break weather I keep it or not and I really like the car so hope I can fix it. Just a thought ...
Does playing with the hvac controls make any difference ?
If you manually half-close the vents for instance .
Or if you close them completely can you then hear it through other vents ?
Does hitting the recirc button change it ?
Does sliding the center vent control between hot and cold change it ?
Does it go away when you only have air directed at your feet ??

I'm thinking there are a lot of solenoids closing vents etc behind there , and it will be a mechanical issue rather than electrical issue , but maybe you can find out exactly where it is by process of elimination .

Good luck with it , and don't let a minor irritation turn into an irrational thought process ....

Once I've cured all my wind noise problems by fitting a new cowl and complete windscreen trimmings , I'm expecting to hear more minor noises like you're experiencing !!

Just had a thought ...
It could well be the windscreen side-trims on the a pillar .
Tape them too !!!

What I did was tape everything , and the wind noise stopped .
So I untapped one at a time to find where it wa coming from .

Unfortunately , it was coming from everywhere
