Hi,

needless to say, some of the pixels on my dash are out, making reading the messages a little interesting.

Is this one transmission overheat? Or something else?

If it is transmission overheat, it appeared after putting in drive & turning AC on after being parked all day (it was sunny today). Any suggestions as to what's going on?

That appears to be what it looks like.

Have a look at the bottom of the radiator and see if it looks in good order. The bottom bit is used to cool the oil for the transmission. Get it swapped or flushed out if it looks bad.

This may help a bit, even if it's for a later car than yours ?

Is it not a bit strange getting this after it was parked for 9 hours? (Started up, into drive, AC on and bing)

Had that on my Discovery 2...... Nothing wrong with the box......

Is your gearbox actually going into the overheat mode like it says in the info above ? 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Today the warning came on at starting up. For first 10 mins driving, gear shifts were clunky and then smoothed out. Haven't checked the rad yet, but suspect it might all be a simple as a fluid and filter change.

If transmission oil cooler is clogged up, no amount of fluid and filter changes will make any difference. On a MY02 it is probably worth removing the cooler to see what is what. IIRC a new one is not all that expensive.... .

That display looks like mine That's why I got the Bluetooth IID tool, so that I could find out what it's trying to say, are you sure that it's not say transmission gone left

Re cooler, I picked up a new Hella one (that is OEM) from Mode for £165, as the gearbox builders wouldn't warranty my rebuilt gearbox without a new one fitted. I've still got the old one that's been through a parts washer  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Yeah, thanks. Going to check the lot - rad, pipes, cooler & do the fluid & filter

Unfortunately the oil cooler isn't an oil cooler it's a heat exchanger, which dumps the heat from the gearbox oil in to the water system to cool it. As far as cooling goes it works very well as it also helps to get the gearbox up to working temp quicker than the old fashioned air cooled rad.

But this is where the positives end , if it becomes blocked or damaged it's a lot more expensive to replace. And if more cooling is required, due to heavy loads on the transmission, it is very difficult to increase the cooling area. I am still divided as to it's benefits over an air cooled system.

I can see that if you are in colder climates, the heating effect is very beneficial for the gearbox, and as such the system does work very well. But if your using your ffrr as a tractor it is not quite so easy to increase the cooling for the gearbox, in fact I haven't found away of doing this yet and really need to, anybody?  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

In the end, I didn't do the fluid change and cooler \ rad checks myself - time being the issue.

Anyway, the mechanic has come back saying problem not cured and it's time for gearbox out & strip. Quote for that is £1700.

A quick google finds several places offering RR recon gearboxes delivered or car collected & fitted - some with warranties e.g.

which at £1100 with 1yr warranty is considerably better.

So my question to you guys is do any of you have any recommendations for gearbox specialists - ideally nr Manchester, or failing that, who would collect car?

Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near these cheap places, having stripped mine down to see the awful work done on the box before these people are nothing but cowboys, they know what will last just outside the warranty, that's if they'd even repair it within the warranty period, they'd just come up with some feeble excuse and not pay...
