Rear hub ball joints - MOT advisory

Just got my low (<50k) mileage 2007 3.6TDV8 through the MOT with advisories - slight play in rear hub ball joints both sides, upper & lower. When I suggested they quote for the work they said it would come to about £600 with genuine LR parts. Seems a bit excessive to me. What would you expect to pay at a specialist garage (not main dealer)? Any MOT testers out there? Would you say this is an advisory?

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Never knew there were balljoints on the rear, there are rear lower bushes (2 large) rose bushes (2 small) and 2 rear track arms so maybe them they were thinking of.

Rear hub ball joints have many names, of which rose bushes/joints are one Thumbs Up

RHF000260 for the uppers, and RBK500220 for the lowers (though they supersede to a new part number) You also need a new circlip for the lower bushes, RYV000010 Thumbs Up

It looks like a fairly straightforward job for a specialist 4x4 garage. Any idea how many hours labour?

Less than 3 hours, providing nothing unforeseen crops up Thumbs Up

They can be done DIY, providing you have something suitable to press the new bushes back in the hub

Don't mind paying a garage to do it, provided I'm not overpaying. I don't have the kit/time/know-how/patience. Bit disappointed with the MOT. I know they're doing their job, but 'slight' shouldn't be an advisory imho. They could've mentioned it to me rather than make it part of the cars permanent record.

Best to get it sorted sooner rather than later, as you plan too, otherwise you will start to see some severe tyre wear either on the inner or outer edges, meaning more £££!

Also get a 4 wheel alignment done after the work has been carried out, especially (but not just because) if they are changing the control arm.

Thumbs Up .

They called them balljoints because most people wouldn't understand the term Heim Joint or Rose Joint (Rose Joint is to Heim joint as Sellotape is to clear sticky tape....)

Original parts are about £35 each joint, I'd ask for new bolts as well as they are tightened to a very high torque, they work out about £10 each for the bolt and associated washers and nuts, the top two bolts are camber bolts.

Job can be done easily with garage equipment in under two hours....

£600 does seem rather steep....

As Joe said, don't wait too long or your tyres will suffer and the joints start squeaking after a while...... Pete

I expect the MOT computer system has a limited number of terms that can be used. Likely to be only Ball joints or Bushes, so they picked the best option.
