depends if you have enough grooves in the tyre ..look at f1 cars with their very wide tyres..

This is a little misleading, dry tryes on an F1 car are wider than the wets. This is because, as Fox said wider tyres have reduced pressure per square inch, but also because the wider the tyre the greater the water displacement needed by the grooves and further to travel from centre to outside of wheel. Generally on road tyres narrower tyres are better in wet, sports cars with wide tyres are notorious for being skittish in the wet due to aqua-planning.

An F1 car has really wide tyres to lay down the power on the track, too narrow and the tyres would be shredded by the power. And/or overheat after a very short while needing frequent pitstops, this is a reason they are not low profile also so more air to control temperature. Rules have changed often regarding F1 wheels and tyres, back in the eighties the tyres were ridiculously wide. They were then narrowed to reduce grip and ultimately strip speed, due to danger. Now have got wider again but limited the engines in the cars and electronic toys...

Right, bored myself now so will stop there. Rolling with laughter

yeah, sorry went off on one... Laughing

Really only meant that wide tyres better in dry, narrow in wet. But Vogue summed it up best.

(Apols to all - was just a little bored and needed a distraction from the document I'm currently writing. Back to work now I suppose Whistle )

decided to stick with the standard 255/50 20 as don't want to mess up handling or ride.

just need to decide on which make to go for - local dealer has recommended Yokohamas instead of the Contis - any views ??

My SC is fitted with conti's and the fronts look to be wearing on the outside. So if the dealer is recommending yoko's, I will go for them when mine need replacing.

Looking at etyres, the yokos are also £100 per tyre cheaper than the conti's as well.

I have original spec 20" Continentals on mine - yes, they do wear very quickly on outside edge.

Recently replaced all four tyres (still new Contis) with various ones I found on ebay and fitted to brand new alloys - so far they all seem to be ok but have only done approx 1500miles - if this lot start to wear in the same way (usually within 3500-5000 miles) I will be looking for some from another manufacturer.

From what I understand the Contis (approx £250 fitted) are among some of the most expensive tyres you can buy for the RR with Yokohamas and Vredsteins (that are often recommended) approx £100 cheaper.

Ideally I would like to try some Dunlop ST8000's which are also a little less expensive than the Contis - only due to the fact I had Dunlops fitted to my previous RR and never had any troubles with them for the entire time I owned the car, and because also they look bit more beefy on the outside edge which I think suits the look of the car better.

I would certainly stick to the correct profile tyre on 20" alloys (255/50/20) but if you want to improve ride quality then maybe a second set of 19" alloys and tyres (which are ideal) might be worth a try? - you can usually find a decent set of 19" wheels and tyres on the eBay for around £500 - 20"s really are as big as you would want to go before ruining the ride quality totally.

Thumbs Up

My contis are banjaxed on the outers after 20,000 miles - just like the ones on my previous 06. As long as the alternatives are rated for both load and speed I'll be trying them next. Don't want to get caught out by the insurance company.... Land Rover Addict
