[SOLD] FREE OF CHARGE - Snow Chains for 255/50/20

They are getting in my way now - and if I put them back in the shed they will stay there forever - so another week & they will go in the bin, which would be a shame.

Only ever fitted on my drive so I was sure I knew how they worked - didn't want to be caught in a snowstorm in the dark trying to figure it out for the first time.

Other than that, never used, but have accompanied me on many a trip to the Alps.

They come in a carry case.

Collection from Peterborough - or I could meet in Central London - or postage would be £13 with my usual courier - or you can sort out your own collection - I'm not bothered really, just want shot of them.

I honestly have no idea - there is definitely some latitude as there is a tightening process

TBH, I think 255 55 20 might be a stretch too far though

I think they would fit the 255 55 19 as the diameter is about the same - not that its much help - but think that extra inch or so diameter might be too much

If you were closer, you'd be welcome to try them - but I only have 275 40 22's

Comparison

1" diameter & 3" circumference

They came with a leaflet that listed a bunch of other sizes - which I lost - but from memory were all sorts of different with, aspect ratios & diameters - but no 2 were similar, so I thing 50 to 55 is unlikely to work

I have a set of these chains (LR accessory VUJ000020). The brochure says they are for 18" and 19" rear wheels only, not 255/50R20. The LR accessory for 20" wheels is the "snow traction system" LR005737 which is used on the front wheels. Looking at the 405 accessory brochure the snow traction system looks very similar, but has the part number VPLGW0081. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I can't see a reason that a set of chains which fit the 255 55 19 or 255 60 18 won't fit the 255 50 20s as the rolling radius is the same. this means that the edge of the tyre is the same difference from the strut, and as the width of the tyre is the same then there shouldn't be much trouble fitting them.

I have a generic set for 19" which I am planning to use on the 20" this winter trip if needed, unless anyone can give me a reason why not? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

They will fit just fine - on the 20's you might find that the chain is close to the rim - that's the only reason I can think of why the official kit is more of a studded belt type arrangement.

The ones I bought for the 22's on the L405 are that style - Thule K-Summit XL's Thumbs Up

Just try fitting them at home to make sure you're happy with them, but I'd be surprised if you have a problem.

I agree that the sizes of the two systems should be the same, but as LR say 18 & 19 chains on rear wheels, 20 system on front, I would wonder whether there is something else to it. Miight the chain damage the rim of the 20" wheel as it needs a higher sidewall? And why the front/rear difference - might the chain catch something at the front?

I wonder whether LR Customer Relations might be able to say? Only Range Rovers since 1988

Chains won't fit on the front at all - there isn't enough clearance - run your hand behind the tyre from 11 to 1 o'clock and you will see what I mean Thumbs Up

Therefore if you have chains they have to go on the rear.

However, if you have a belt type system like the Thule K-summit, then you could put them on the front.

I assume there is benefit in putting them on the front as you then have steering ???

Chains are close to the rim on 20's

The LR recommendation has to be based on extended use in the worst of conditions.

I'd have been happy with chains on 20's for crawling into a ski resort, but fortunately never had to fit them. I did, However, have to carry them.....
