Hi guys, I have noticed recently my engine seems to be noisier than usual when idling. It's driving fine and there are no warning lights but it sounds odd on tick over. I have nothing to compare against so have put a video on the tube and would be grateful if you could have a listen and give me your opinion. It was also serviced and MOT'd just a few weeks ago.

Have you changed fuel to a supermarket recently? No, same fuel as usual which is normally supermarket.

It sounds like there is something switching on and off in thebackground as well

is that not the a/c compressor switching on and off?
try switching ac off and re-listening

have you checked your oil level (and your coolant level seeing as you're under there) ? 2007 Vogue TDV8 with 255/55/20's fitted

Not got anything to compare it to, but could it not be an ancillary such as a water pump or alternator bearing? Rather than the engine itself?

You may be able to narrow it down by placing a big screwdriver on various parts and putting your ear on the other end..... 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

^ At last, someone else who has heard of this trick. Last time I suggested this (on another forum) I was ridiculed soundly.

the sound switching in and out is likely to be the AC compressor as said. it will engage and disengage as needed. turn the AC off and it should stop.  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Thanks guys, I'll have another play. I am familiar with the screwdriver trick, I've used it many times myself.

I could do with a side by side comparison to see if mine is actually running noisily. It just doesn't seem very refined at the moment even for a diesel.

It is the air on switching on and off but even with it off I am now paranoid that it is too noisy. I've had the screwdriver on what parts I can actually get to and they all sound noisy 😣

I've added another vid with the noise. It would maybe put my mind at rest if some kind soul had a recording of a sweet running by engine.

Have you checked things like oil level after the service?
You say there's no warning lights but have you seen whether there are any faults with a diagnostics tool?

Does it change with revs or loading? Road speed or engine speed?

I'm also scrap at hearing these things but doesn't sound that unusual. Once I've reassembled mine, hopefully this weekend, I can see if I can get a recording for you. Ed

It will always sound worse if you have just fired it up. Don't forget it is a big diesel lump, not a petrol, it will always sound a bit tractory. Can't remember exactly what my 3.6 sounded like but I don't think it was a million miles off that.

Edit Just listened carefully to that link and it sounds pretty healthy to me. No particular knocking or tapping, no whistling from turbos.

Ps what's the bit wrapped in tape above the dipstick in the top pic? There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I'll plug the kid tool in tomorrow and check for faults. The noise is on tick over or lows revs but you can't hear it inside unless the windows are opon And the radio is off.

The noise is there when it's warm. I'm not sure what is wrapped in tap but think it's part of a loom that just happens to close to the camera, I'll double check tomorrow.

Well it turns out the noise was the air con compressor. I got this replaced and it's much better now although the first time I took it,for a decent drive, going on holiday, the fan belt broke. I'll be having a word with the garage when I get back tomorrow.

After 5 hours at the side of the road I was eventually recovered to the camp site as it was bank holiday weekend and no garages were open. I tried 2 local garages who both said they were too busy to repair the car and ended up having it recovered to the recovery garage and they fixed it. In the end I broke down Sunday and didn't get it back until weds pm.

On top of that the damn rear view camera has now packed up 😡

Not a good week but I still love the car😀
