Yes check for "oil drain pipe modification" is a 10 hour modification requiring drilling the block at owners cost...

Is this something that they will do or should do?

this mod is only done if the FF needs it, it will not be done 'just in case'

on your test drive , floor the accelerator so that the revs go over 2500 rpm, if smoke comes out of the back then you need the mod, if not then you are ok...

if you get an LR approved FF and if the mod has not been done then you have two years to find out whether you need it ...

Well @ rr driver...you did ask Wink
There is a little marketing hype in there, but most of it is good engineering strategy and solid information.

Hi all, hope you don't mind me resurrecting this! I'm in the process of looking for a 4.4 at the moment. Has anyone got any idea how much this mod would cost if I required it? And what is the easiest way to identify weather it has been done or not?

Thanks in advance for any help and advice. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

Thanks for the reply Stan. Is it necessary if no smoke? Or best to have it done regardless? Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

because the 4.4 tdv8 is such a lazy engine most dont go over 2500 rpm when at those revs the second turbo kicks in...if and when you test drive , boot it so the revs go over that rpm and have a look in the rear view mirror for excess smoke.. ... - .- -.

I had the turbo drain mod done in January.
The car is a dream to drive now. As Stan says , I rarely thrash it to get it anywhere near 2500rpm, whereas previously I was constantly thinking, I need to get the revs up to burn off the oil.
I have "tested " it several times, but not seen a hint of smoke since the mod and now just enjoy the power when I need it.
If you are buying from a MD, I would insist that it is done before parting with your cash. It wasn't easy to convince LR to pay for it.
Enjoy,

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply. The car I am looking at buying, I took it for a drive today. There was nothing at tick over, I got the guy to rev it hard whilst I was stood behind and nothing either. I spank it a couple of times on the test drive and still nothing! I am hoping it is ok.

How did you get the dealer to pay for it? The one I am looking at is from November 2011 and falls in the chassis number bracket on the sheet I was sent by Stan. Current: TDV8 (3.6) RRS HSE

If it's not smoking then I would be inclined not to worry about it too much.

I've not had it done on mine and not had any issues, only once got smoke after it had been started and moved at the garage a few times this builds up the oil in the secondary turbo which then gets smoky when it kicks in. Unless it's displaying problems and you have the LR warranty then you will struggle to get them to pay for it. The tsb details what has to be done and it involves drills and holes in the engine block! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
