Can anyone tell me which of these is my TD6 transmission fill hole.

The hex nut looks more like a filler plug to me but the location of the torx nut is closer to the location of filler plug shown in the wikki on here. Torx nut seems awfully small to be a filler plug to me. Any advise appreciated as I wont start this job untill I know for sure. Car is on ramp as we speak. Ive left the torx head socket in place to show location better.

Thanks. 2002 TD6 Epsom Green

In your first photo it is the one to the right (rear) of where you have the socket. It should be a 14mm allen key (hex key). Not much clearance between it and the subframe.

I made up one like this cutting the end off a 14mm allen key and using a 14mm socket https://www.amazon.co.uk/Teng-M121514c-Soc...B0001P0WMK

Don't forget to have the engine running when you remove it. Otherwise it's a sleeve full of transmission fluid. Wink

PS. It might be the angle of your photo that makes the socket look further forward than it is. John

Thanks Weegie but the hex hole to the right of my socket is just a round void. Its part of the casing. Nothing to be moved there. I know its hard to judge in the photos and I did doyble check when I saw your post.

Im going to go with my gut and try the hex nut Shocked 2002 TD6 Epsom Green

Yes, the workshop manual suggests it should be where the ‘round void’ is on your transmission casing but it looks like yours is an earlier design or something and they subsequently relocated it.

On the 2003 model that I stripped you can see from the inside of the casing that the filler/level plug hole is on the left side towards the front (as per the manual)

Yet the official GM manual shows it to be where your hex bolt is, towards the rear of the casing on the LHS. I agree therefore that the hex nut is likely to be the right one on your transmission.

Strange.

Thanks Phil. Im currently struggling to get it undone. I think they relocated it because there is no room to get good purchase on it. Spanners are slipping off it because they are at an awkward angle and there isnt room for a socket as the driveshaft is in the way. Im going to have to get creative here. Nut is close to rounding off. Big Cry 2002 TD6 Epsom Green

Hope you finally managed to get the plug out.

I notice that the ATSG manual for the 5L40-E suggests that the filler/level plug position is a petrol vs. diesel thing (which obviously doesn’t make sense for your vehicle)

yet the RealOEM diagram for the BMW X5 with the 3.0 TD6 engine (also 4WD) seems to indicate that the plug is at the rear?? (front one is greyed out)

Out of interest, what are the number and letters in the top RH corner of your green id plate? Does yours say 2 G XG ?

Thats the tag on my gearbox now. I know that it had a 2nd hand replacement gearbox under a different owner. I have no idea what vehicle it came from. Could it have been from an X5.?

Anyway I got the plug out after an hour long battle of wills. Had to make a special tool from an old impact socket. Fun fun fun. Not for the faint hearted. Plug was dangerously close to rounding off.

Always always loosen your refill plug first folks. Laughing 2002 TD6 Epsom Green

Ahh, that might explain it!

The number 4 says it’s a 2004MY transmission
The G just means it’s a 5L40 model (it would be a letter Z for the 5L50)
The YZ says your transmission (or the casing, at least) is from a petrol 3.0i BMW X5, which would explain why your filler plug is where it is Smile

Thanks for that Phil. I knew myself there was something odd about it. Nice to know where I stand now and what all those letters mean.

I take it the transmission oil will be the same between the two.? 2002 TD6 Epsom Green

Over the years the fluid requirement for the 5L40-E changed from Dexron III to Texaco Texamatic 7045E to Texaco ETL 8072B and finally to Dexron VI - the Dexron III specification having been retired in 2006. Unfortunately we don’t have the facts as to what the differences are between them (some argued that the fluid formulation was being changed as part of a continuous development to try to reduce the valve block wear problems). But to answer your question, as far as I know, Land Rover are still recommending the use of 7045E in the TD6 transmission.
