Hi All,

I've been onto page 15 of this topic and found nothing conclusive, all be it taste related, I would like to know people's thoughts of using 18s or 20s on my FF.

The cars used for hacking around country roads and trailing anything from a small plant trailer to a 3000kg car transporter. I'm not too ars*d about bling, in fact I like the country type off-road look with the smaller 18s if that makes sense.

The car was bought in London, dark blue and has 20" stormers that need a refurb and have accelera tyres on which are ok tread wise but not new.

Do I refurb and re-tyre or sell and look for 18" 5 spokes parallel wheels, not sure of the name?

* I read on this forum about earlier cars only having 18" wheels, later 20" wheels and cars had different drive shafts?

First off, welcome to the forum.

Wheel nut change from earlier to later cars, not sure when.......

Later cars 3.6 TDV8 and 4.2SC have larger brakes, smallest rim size is 19"

It depends on which car you have, or intend to have, there are plenty of off road tyres available to suit any of the rims  Regards

I have 18's on mine and think I will probably stick with them as the country roads I mainly drive on are pot holed. I wonder if the lower profile tyres give the suspension ball joints and bushes a harder time ?

For your purposes I would recomend 18" with slightly oversized General Grabber AT's , not much is going to stop you then and very hard wearing . 2008 MY Supercharged

Biffo- sounds similar, just replaced fronts on this one

I have never run 18" so not sure but some one who does will be along soon but at a guess say 255/18/55 if that is even a proper size . 2008 MY Supercharged

I'd stick with standard 18" set up, with 255/60/18's, there is no way you should think about bigger tyres if your going to be using it for heavy towing... it struggles enough with out playing around with the overall gearing.

The 255/60/18 tyres give a good ride quality, and don't require massive over inflation for stable towing...

Tyres... I'm running General Grabber AT's, the 255/60/18 is a 112H XL, 'XL' stands for extra load... although I haven't discovered how much extra load is worth, sort of get the feeling that it's about the same as std 112H but with added Bull  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I have 265/60/18s (with Compomotive rims) as they are a pretty common tyre on several Japanese 4WDs.

I'm pretty happy with that size and can't say I noticed a change in the drive feel from the 255/55/19s. The extra 3/4" in sidewall height helps with very uneven surfaces. ______________________________

It seems to be pointing that way, I have 20" at the moment.

I used hankook Ventus on my t5, RRS alloys, they were a cracking tyre, grip/ wear/ cost.

There seems to be a plethora of 255/60's. Ok your highfly things aren't going to be as good as a Pirelli....

I had 18" on my first rr and this was definitely the best for comfort, ride and cross country. However 20" on my next rr gave me better cornering on tarmac.

Btw I have a set of 5 x 18" wheels going spare with the 5th tyre being unused spare with the red stripe still on. The other tyres will need changing as they are down to 3-4mm but would suit you if you are going to put new rubber in. Pm me if interested.

rar110, the difference between 265/60/18 and 255/60/18 is 10 mm in width and 6mm in height... your tyres are 6mm or 1/4" bigger... sod all in the grand scheme of things, and if Jap sizes are easier to get over there, stick with'em

There are a few issues with 20"rims on a TD6... it is alleged that they cause vibration through the steering wheel at idle or something, but I'm only reporting what I have read, I have no experience of this as I have only run 18"'s on my ffrr... And while a lower profile tyre is favourable for towing, as there is less movement in the sidewall, I would opt for the better ride and increase the rear tyre pressures when towing.. although I didn't really notice any real sway, regardless of the pressure the tyres were at, but between 35 and 40 psi felt the best compromise  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I accept that's what the standardised sizing would indicate. However, side by side with the 255/55/19 showed different. Even in the same brand and same size there was 10-15 mm difference between the 265/60/18 AT & HT versions. ______________________________

Thanks for all the suggestions and input. I think I'll go with 18" and look for a full set with decent tyres, the 20" I have on now I'll try and move on once done.
