Speak to Powerhouse in Chesterfield. They're the company who sell the uprated pulleys for the Superchargers.

They can rebuild the Eaton superchargers which would probably be a whole lot cheaper then fitting a new one.

Fingers crossed that cutting the belt does sort the problem so you can get to the bottom of it.

I would certainly look at rebuilding rather than replacing.

Be interested to see if the supercharger is actually the noise.

Have you used anything to try and locate the noise whilst the car is running and listen to various parts of the engine etc...?

Right - need to update this.

I cut the Supercharger belt today - no change on this bloody noise.

Any more suggestions? I'm pulling my hair out on this. Every "expert" that it goes to just scratches their ass - at my expense.

I've replaced the exhaust from the cats back(not inc the cats).
Replaced the engine mounts.
Replaced the main gearbox mount.
Removed and refitted the whole intake assembly.
Replaced all belts inc tensioners.
Cut the Supercharger belt temporarily.
4 new tyres all round.



2000 RPM & Load = Noise
2000 RPM No Load = No Noise

Just to re-affirm, this is RPM dependant not speed dependant 

Its not the Torque Converter is it?

I don't think so - when I had a failing TC on a previous L322 it sent a shudder through the whole car.

It's a good shout though - is there a way to rule it out? 

I had similar and it was my alternator. It packed up in the end but no one could pin point it.

Did you get that while stationery too? This only happens with a load on the engine - a slight incline etc. 

When you say booming, is it the same type of booming you get when you have a window open at the wrong amount, and the air pressure resonates in the cabin?

Could it be something crazy like the soundproofing on the underside of the bonnet shuddering/resonating? Or something else similar that could be large enough to reasonate in such a way?

Given all that you've tried... who knows.  V8 or else ...

Right, your noise. You say RPM related but is this in ALL gears? Using command shift would bring this one out and if it's not there in the lower gears that might suggest the 20" wheel problem which TD6's seemed to suffer with. There was a TSB about this as well but can't put my hand to it right now. If you can lay your hands on a set of 19's off a 06-09 TDV8 that would prove it.

Also, if not in all gears it could be speed related perhaps? Something I had on a different car (Skoda) was the rubber flaps on the vents in the boot were stuck to the vent grilles. Once it got to 63mph I would get the booming like when you just have a back window open. Took me ages to find that one.

So, under load but not free revving. Drivetrain related perhaps? Is the centre e-diff OK? I recall all S/C cars had the e-diff. Might it be stuck in the locked position?
CV joints all OK?
Front diff input shaft bearing? Easy to feel that one by pulling on the prop shaft and feeling for movement.
Transfer box output shaft bearings? Smack bang in the middle of it all one of those would definitely cause a vibration.

The only other thing I can think of is the torque converter, and you could prove that by command shift into higher gears and forcing the lock up. Tends to be more evident when pulling away from standstill.

Perhaps you could find a place with a rolling road. Set the car up to reproduce the fault and stethoscope various parts until you find the vibration source. Just a thought.

It's all gears, the TSB I read was specific to the 4.2SC cars, affected models had to have a modified front suspension strut, I may have to change the wheels just to rule this out for peace of mind.

Deffo not speed related, will happen at 20 miles an hour or 60mph depending on gear/load/rpm.

I don't think mine has the e-diff, it's an 05 which is listed in Microcat as an 06 model year and there is no diff lock icon on the screen. I would have thought if the diff were locked I'd chew through tyres and have snapped something by now.

I can't actually remember getting these tested - but will get them thoroughly tested ASAP.

As it does it in every gear I suspect not the TC - I've replaced 2 TC's now and am familiar with the cattle grid feeling one gets.

I like the idea of this, if the rolling road is able to provide a resistance then I should be able to reproduce the noise - if it is basically freewheeling then it may not.

It's high mileage 185,000. I bought it at 170ish. It made the noise on day one and hasn't changed since. Unfortunately as I bought it from a dealer I'm unable to speak to the previous owner. 

I only asked the last question, Dom asked the others...

If it's been doing it for 15,000 miles and got no worse then it isn't anything wearing out, could well be the wheels, someone near you must have a spare set you could borrow for a day, put a request thread up...
