Cleaned the engine bay earth points today - Worth doing...

I have been loathed to disconnect the battery on the RR but today had no choice as I'm removing the fuel pump. While the battery was disconnected, I thought I'd take the opportunity to clean and lube all of the earth points in the engine bay.

Prior to taking the leads off the battery, I followed the instructions in the manual, ie: Disarmed the alarm, opened the load space cover and removed the cover from the nav unit. Then I opened the bonnet and left the car for a few minutes until the nav computer was shut down, then disconnected the earth lead followed by the positive.

There is:
The negative lead from the battery to the body.
A negative connection on the top of the N/S suspension turret.
Two connections behind the header tank N/S.
Two big ones beneath the brain box on the O/S.
Two behind the brain box.
One more for the bonnet on the O/S.

I'd guess the nuts were all installed on the bare body before its painted then the wires are installed during assembly. They were mostly okay but are all dry. A couple were a bit oxidised, the one for the bonnet was loose.

So, if you are fitting a new battery, it may be worth 10 mins with 10mm and 13mm spanners, a tub of Vaseline, a wire brush and give them a quick clean ...

One thing I would say would be to use copper grease instead of Vaseline - as the former is a conductor rather than the latter is an insulator (even though as long as you have metal on metal contact you should be OK.

I have one of these in my arsenal (not to be confused with arsehole as that would be uncomfortable)

It cleans the battery terminal and also the battery clamp.

I used one of them on the drill for the battery terminals. Smile

I went with the Vaseline instead of the Copper Grease because I find that the Copper Grease can dry out over time although they all got a good dose of aerosol white grease afterwards anyway.

You're missing the female brush, Delta (no puns, now). Plugs right down over the terminal and cleans it up perfectly in no time flat and with no energy expended. I used to have one of these in my toolbox all the time in the US. Got to Europe and have not seen one here - ever. And I have looked.

Don't suppose they're available by mail order, are they Dan?
