Not to start contradicting but plasmas unfortunately will always suffer from 'burn' due to the technology used.
Most plasmas nowadays have an 'anti-burn' program which you can run which in essence sets all of the pixels to peak White which will even out any burn.

IMHO if I was buying a new display I'd go for a high end LED which, although still pricey, will offer the best futureproofing etc.

Plasmas have traditionally offered the best performance & deepest blacks etc (&are also the cheaper option), but consumer LCDs are now two a penny (if you're willing to sacrifice quality). Remember plasmas will use more energy to run than LCD/LED screens.

The other thing which should have a bearing is size, don't buy a 32/42" just because thats what most people have and don't listen to the guys that say, your room is too small for xx" screen (look at your laptop screen and equate that I.e. Size at viewing distance to the equivalent size it would be at the distance between you & the tv position) bet that comes out larger than the guys saying it won't fit.

Surround sound: different kettle of fish although I would advise against utilising the 'all in one' solutions if you want high quality audio (having said this if it's just for tv sound then there are systems which perform well - home cinema: NO)

I've had my 50" Philips plasma for 2.5 years, there is no burn in .....

It p*sses all over the LCD's we have in the house for resolution, gaming and action films .....

So in my book, and my experience, it wins

@Thrasher - I have a couple of Plasma screens which have not suffered from burn, mainly because in the domestic environment the displayed image does not have any static items (unless you watch Sky Sports 24/7) which would cause the burn in, used to see loads with plasmas that had Sky News running......Logo in top corner and of course the initial burn in period takes the longest to burn-out..
Recently designed & installed a £250K system (so it does not really matter how much you spend on a plasma - although obviously there was more than 1 and other equipment also) and could see distinguishable burn after 1 week (anti-burn not enabled due to client not getting A**e in to gear and addressing their side of deliverables), suffice to say the appearance of burn is now reducing....which they are happy about.
Also plasma screens run much hotter than LCD/LED which usually not much to worry about until you have 9 of them in a small room and don't heed the Integrator's advice to upgrade the aircon in the room.

Yes, the contrast and blacks were/are much better on plasma - all depending upon model.

@Scarey, I used a Plasma monitor (i.e. pro unit with no tuner, speakers etc) at home for many years as the domestic units were not up to scratch, now got an LCD but still feed all of the sources through my system so the LCD does not need anything (although do have an RF (Aerial) feed to it for when SWMBO refuses to allow Top Gear on Sky but it's on the never ending Dave loop )

Don't get me onto HDMI though, great at home for a single cable solution but it's 'infiltrating' the Commercial & Professional arenas and can be the bain of one's existence.....

It depends on how you watch your TV. In our house, we have a Panasonic plasma TV in the lounge and a Samsung LCD TV in the bedroom. If you watch it in a well lit environment, LCD does well. Plasma in my opinion is a better all round performer. The black levels, particularly from Pioneer (shame they stopped making TVs) and Panasonic TVs can not be matched by LCD.

LED is a different ball game but I feel it's still a beta product, particularly for 3D TV.

Screen burn on modern plasmas (the ones sold in the last 3-4 years) takes a long time to occur and is easily rectified. You would need to leave the TV running a static image for a long time before you start to see any form of screen burn. If you do experience screen burn, tune into a channel with a lot of moving images. That solves the issue.

A good source of information is AVForums.com. There are a lot of knowledgeable people there and they are a friendly bunch.

When you are ready to buy, shop around and buy from John Lewis. They offer a standard five year, no quibble warranty and will match high street retailers anywhere in Britain both before purchasing and up to 28 days after (AVForums usually run a JL Price Matching thread where people post the deals they got at the store). UKRangie's spot on with regards to John Lewis, they'll match pricing which can be virtually the same prices as trade but you get the 5 years warranty which is worth £100s on say a 50" screen.

If you're ok with an older (last model/year) then there's always Richer Sounds who offer warranties (@10% of value of goods (I think?)) although the prices for Gaz's LG42" were around those of Amazon but you do get a physical shop to go into if you're near one.

Just to note that I actually bought the 42" LG 1080 HD LCD from Curry's with full guarantee at £379.00.

I have used the John Lewis price comparison service several time but my problem is that when I decide to buy I want in the house within an hour! Picking up at Curry's out of town is dead easy.....

Sold three high value cars this week including the Supercharged RR which was AA Inspected and rated as "Excellent - no faults", a 2008 BMW 530d M Sport and a Jaguar 4.2 S/C "R" so I am off to the living room to celebrate with a nice bottle of red....

Its not a dealership as such as we do not sell new cars but we are an independent prestige car dealer specialising in quality used Land Rover, Jaguar, Maserati & BMW. I am fortunate enough to be able to finance the business personally therefore my costs are low and the enjoyment high.

I founded a mid sized but very successful online financial services company back in the late 90's and ran it for the last ten years before selling out to a major uk insurer so its a real pleasure to be able to work with beautiful cars.

Lucky sod, Still hold on to the dream, so maybe one day when the kids are older and things start to pick up.
