Tailgate out of alignment, dealer problem

Hi all,

I have a 2014 L405 and in the past few weeks the boot has not been opening and closing correctly.
When it does open, the top, part opens and the bottom doesn't. When pressing the button for the bottom part, quite a loud bang happens and then it opens.

The boot will not close automatically, so I have to manually shut it, which it doesn't fully close.

I had it into the garage today and they said that it is out of alignment, probably caused by a rear end shunt and as such I will have to pay to have it fixed.

I have had the car for a year and a half and I have never been in an accident. I bought the car from a main dealer in York.

Surely a rear end shunt would cause more damage than putting the boot out of alignment???

I am going to dispute this with the garage when they give me a quote, but any suggestions on how I should handle this would be welcome.

Thanks in advance!
Stuart

What a load of b Censored ks. I have a 2014 and at the weekend the lower shelf only opened half way and would not budge any further down although there was slack in the wires. Raised it a few times and then it lowered properly. I’ve never had a shunt...it’s just the many intermittent faults on a Land Rover which a main dealer can never find a solution for! Current MY2020

Thank you! That is really helpful.

I'll be ready when they say "it's not covered by warranty"

Apologies for very late response to this but I had same issue with 2014 with < 15k miles on it late last year. Apparently the hinges were worn and weren't covered by the warranty. The dealer I bought mine from eventually agreed to cover it. How'd you get on?

Good luck with it, but a technical bulletin will not mean it's covered by warranty. It's there to help the dealers and techs to solve common problems quicker without contacting them

I had a tailgate opening/closing problem as described above on my 2014 VSE and Hunters in Guildford adjusted it free of charge under my warranty a couple of weeks ago.....

I had an absolute mare with getting this fixed. My local dealer said to me that it has been in an accident and that I would have to pay.
I contacted the CEO by email and got a very helpful call the following day, however it took a number of attempts to get it fixed.
It amazes me how shocking the level of service I have received from multiple main dealers, I am very tempted to get rid of the car.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? Was it an alignment problem or something fixable?

There is a great video on you tube how to fix this problem - I would guess that the pin has come off under the lower flap - it’s a ten minute fix.

Thanks - useful video Thumbs Up

Unfortunately my problem is different - lower won't close - but that shows how to remove the cover, so I may have a poke around in there & see if there is anything obvious

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. My RR is in right now for lower tailgate issues (inconsistent opening and closing) and I've been told the same thing that the upper tailgate is out of alignment.

The car is a 09/18 model which I bought in August 20. I've only done about 1500 miles in the ar since then thanks to Covid. I was also told that this isn't a warranty issue but there are no signs of any damage to the car (certainly has't been bumped since I've got it). £120 to fix, which although isn't catastrophic is a pain.

Is this common? If it's not impact damage what caused it?

The upper tailgate is made of plastic. It goes out of alignment by itself! After a little over a year, mine did not soft close anymore. My dealer wouldn't bother... This thread details some adjusting procedures, if you are tempted to do it yourself:
