I have a tdv8 4.4 with 125k miles on the clock. One of the many ailments these large slow reving engines appear to suffer from are carbon clogged and failing EGR valves. At £350 each, replacement is expensive. I have heard of people using emulators sourced from Australia with some success.

I pulled my induction manifold off last year to replace the oil/water cooler (another repetativev fault we have to work through) and it was really clogged with tar. I cleaned it as best I could with diesel fuel. This indicated to me that the rest of the engine was likely the same. I use archoil oil and fuel additives as a preventative measure.

Would hydrogen cleaning solve the problem of keeping the induction and egr system clean of carbon?

Has anybody used hydrogen gas to clean their engine and how successful is it?

I thought there was one EGR on 4.4 tdv8.

I don’t know about hydrogen induction cleaning, but there are a few H2O or water based induction cleaners out there.

Autocode has not so far been able to develop emulators for the 4.4 tdv8, only the 3.6 & 2.7 tdv8. ______________________________

I think the TDV8 4.4 has two EGR's? Perhaps somebody can put us straight on that ........ they are not easy to see or get at.

Hydrogen cleaning ....... if it works appears to be a very cost effective alternative?

I was really surprised at the build up of tar in the engine induction system. I can see why the EGR fails in this engine.

Has anyone had an HHO Carbon clean carried out on their Range Rover TDV8 4.4 and what was the result?

This might not be a very productive thread?

You can buy a spray cleaner with a long hose you feed it in slowly with the engine running. I just saw it on YouTube

I'd have thought that any "liquid moly" type product is going to feed a load of accumulated horribleness into your engine, which can't do it any good? Surely removing the intake and manually cleaning it out - I'm thinking the family dishwasher when the wife's not looking - (joke) would be better?
Hasn't Nino done a detailed post on all this?

i cant recall any tdv8 4.4 egr's failures being mentioned on the forum, they seem to be fairly robust...

hair on the back of my neck stands up just thinking about all the soot and sludge going in to my cylinders, yak, yak . and what will happen if a chunk of it gets in between valve and a valve seat could be a very expensive job to fix it.
take the inlet manifold off, put it in a suitable plastic bucket with some diesel in it, use toilet brush to loosen the soot and finally clean with brake cleaner.

You're right of course Nino. But I was thinking about the turbo(s), and after the turbo where you can't as easily clean....
