New brakes have arrived

Many thanks to Dan the new front discs and pads have turned up and will be fitted as soon as i can be bothered to get off my fat lazy backside and do the job.....

manana......demain........morgen......

Brakes done,

Fairly straightforward to be honest.

Will do a write up shortly. Took some pics and they are in my gallery. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

Ok Here goes.

To start the tools i used were as follows:

large grips
16mm socket
22mm socket
torque wrench
socket rachet
long drift
hammer
3t High lift trolley jack
axle stand

crack off wheel nuts.

Jack vehicle up using front jacing point with trolley jack:



put axle stand under car, i left most of the weight on the jack (not wise but i had the wheel and stand under just incase.



remove the wheel and place under car



take the long drift and knock out the retaining pins on the caliper



take care the retaining spring doesnt launch itself



squeeze the pads against the caliper to ease them off the disc. I did this with a pair of grips.

remove the old pads from the caliper. disconnect the pad wear sensor (passenger side only) leave wire in place for now.

remove the caliper bolts (rave says to remove the banjo fitting from the back of the caliper, but i didnt bother as you would then have to bleed the brakes)



support the caliper so as not to put any strain on the hose.

undo the small allen headed screw holding the disc in place, and remove the disc. may require a tap with a hammer on the back of the disc.

make sure that the face of the hub is clean and free from debris.

put the new disc in position



refit the retaining screw

gently push the pistons back into the housing, depending on the brake fluid levels in the reservoir you may need to bleed out some fluid from the bleed nipple on the caliper. This can be done by hand

refit the caliper using new caliper retaining bolts, and torque to 48 lb ft.

coat the rear of the brake pad in copper grease to prevent squeal.

fit the pads into the caliper.



refit the pins and spring using a hammer and punch to tap them home.



fit the new pad wear sensor, replacing itas you remove the old one so that it is clipped in the right places.

all done



refit the wheel and remove axle stand and jack.

Repeat on the other side. check brake fluid level and top up if needed.

that should be about it, dont forget to allow them to bed in for a few journeys. Thumbs Up There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜œ

Ireland 2008 Range Rover HSE TDV8 Java Black

I'm all set to do this tomorrow bought new Brembo discs and pads. Do you need new caliper retaining bolts as suggested in post above or can I just reuse old ones? Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Ireland 2008 Range Rover HSE TDV8 Java Black

Just did this today fitted Brembo discs and pads. Discs really did need replacing so glad I had the info as per Mark above really straight forward Thumbs Up Present :2008 TDV8 HSE

Ok so now I have a 4.4 it time to swap the brakes on that too. I did the pads and disks when I bought it a few years back but the pads have started to squeal so thy are coming out anyway.

you will need these tools



13mm spanner
drift
long bar to remove wheels
22 and 23 mm sockets for those with swollen nuts
hammer
grips
ceramic grease


The first thing to note is that...yes you can jack the car with a Sprinter jack while the steps are attached and extended, lock them out and you are good to go.



Axle stands as before



the only difference really from above is the addition of a centre bolt to the 6 pot calipers. This needs a 13mm ring spanner on it, back the bolt out most of the way and then knock it with a hammer to get the pin started and then finish driving it out with the drift.







as always remember to detach the brake sensor so you dont have to buy another one....



when removing pads do it one at a time so the pistons on the other side can't push out because you have removed the pad too early.......!!!!!

squeeze the pad you are removing with the pilers against the calliper. remove pads

grease new pads







some debate about greasing the back but I do it and they dont squeal.....

pads in, pins in, and back together, making sure to drive the pins all the way in from the back with the drift, as they dont finish flush with the back of the calliper they go into the recess slightly.

I decided today to check that the pins weren't seized in the calipers. The top and bottom ones were fine; I cleaned them up and greased them with some Ceratec.
But I couldn't work out what to do with the middle pin. I undid the 13mm bolt on the inside of the caliper, then used a hammer and punch to tap the pin outwards. But it would only go so far, then seemed stuck. And I couldn't see what to do with the weird shaped head on the outside of the caliper.
I'm probably being an utter numpty, but how exactly do you remove that middle pin?

As you were doing.

You undo the back 13mm nut then tap the rest of the pin out. I left the 13mm in a bit and hit it to get it started then took it out and used the drift inside the 13mm bolt hole to tap it out. The shaped head on the other side is just so it doesnโ€™t spin when you do it up. You donโ€™t need to do anything to it.

OK, finally, job done. Great write up by NMJ, and I have nothing much to add. The middle pins are a rather odd design but just use a little brute force and they tap out (towards you on the outside of the car).
I noticed that the main-dealer-fitted outgoing pads were made by Jurid, which is the brand I used for the new ones. I paid ยฃ60 ish from Ebay so I can't see why you'd pay more really. Perhaps EBC for less dust?
Finally, the brake pad sensor is extremely fragile so unless you want to buy a new one, be gentle with it. It looks like it destroys itself when the pad wears down to the limit, triggering a message inside the car. But if you replace your pads before then, you can re-use it. I'd say my old pads were about 70% worn, having done 20000 miles, to give you some idea of their lifespan. You might get 30000 if you're careful but that's about it. Then again, this car is a heavy old beast!
