Dealer submitted goodwill claim form to JLR yesterday.
It’s taking a while, 2 weeks tomorrow

Has a specific cause been determined?

I have now received an offer that I see as reasonable from JLR so hopefully a new engine can be ordered. Not fair to reveal offer.

As far as I know the cause was a turbo failed and the engine runaway and seized.

+1 /\

I don't think we owe JLR much in this respect after all its clearly their design at fault.

Would be nice to know what JLR think of this situation but if the OP would rather not say thats fair enough. Sad 405 AB exec seats Baltic and Cirrus

It sounds as though LR are willing to make a significant contribution towards the cost of the repair which will obviously help you but the engine management software should have been programmed to prevent the runaway. LR needs to be proactive in preventing engine destruction by runaway.

My earlier plan for a module to close the throttle butterfly for several seconds every time the ignition is switched off is progressing, with an initial batch of 30 pcbs arriving next week. When ready, it will be available for the minimal parts and shipping cost only so that others can prevent a runaway engine when there's little chance that LR will contribute to the cost of a replacement engine. A blown turbo could still damage the engine if the switching off of the ignition is delayed but without the sustained high revving, there is a good chance that the inter-cooler will still catch any turbo vane pieces, if indeed a turbo starts to disintegrate in those first several seconds. The module will be suitable for all TDV6 and TDV8 engines.

I visited the dealer this morning and the old engine is being removed.

One of the Turbo intercoolers has a few litres of engine oil in it.

4 weeks tomorrow and hopefully will have back by the end of next week

I like the special tool for supporting the engine, looks like a piece of wood with a couple of nails but I'm sure its a Land Rover approved special tool.

So it really was running on oil from the turbo, my guess was right!

At least you'll have an engine with 0 miles on and I assume both turbo's will be replaced, just like new!

It was the right turbo that failed , left hand side looking at front of car.

Turbo drain mentioned in thread fitted to engine see picture.

Progress being made, lots of bits
