I had a similar problem with ours in April and it turned out to be the alternator.

The battery light and faults, with restricted performance came up, managed to her home and checked voltages. The battery at 11V and continuing to fall until the engine coughed and stopped. Battery charger overnight and it held 12.8 volts but, after starting did the same.

So new alternator (but not battery) and 14.8 volts unloaded with 14.6 having all the goodies on (windscreen, heated seats etc. on max).

IIRC the reset for the battery via the IID tells the charging system that you have fitted a new battery and will adjust the charging rate accordingly. Cheers
Richard

I've just replaced the alternator on my 4.4 TDV8 so if you do decide to change it yourself, happy to provide advice if needed - I'd assess as a 6/10 difficulty as a DIY, although more fiddly than difficult.

Thanks all i think it will be the alternator but just checking other peoples experiences, its covered under warranty (rac) Very Happy so i wont be doing it myself, but i worked as a mechanical fitter many years ago and normally do all my own stuff, thanks for the offer JCW i would take you up on it if i was doing it myself. 2011 4.4 tdv8 autobiography black

Just my 2p worth, but doesn't the intelligent charging system not start charging until the engine has been running for 2 minutes?

If you're measuring the voltage immediately after starting, it might be worth waiting 5 minutes and measuring it again... 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Hi, I have just had the same problem, it turned out to be the alternator. There was also a slight burning smell (which apparently accompanies a alternator meltdown).

Hi yes i thought that about the intelligent charging system, so i checked at 2 min intervals for about 20 mins still no change,
i took it into the garage today and strangely enough at under 30mph it didn't show any warnings at all, but over 30 it would flash "charging system fault restricted performance" every time, drop under 30 and it would disappear, also might be of use to someone i had the iid tool connected monitoring battery volts and current for the journey and it showed - 67a when started and for the first 5 mins or so, then dropped to -37a and remained at this for the trip of about 15 miles, with as much turned off as i could, i dont know how accurate these readings are but the volt reading on the iid mached my meter measured across the battery, 37 amps seems a lot to me with nothing turned on, undoubtedly the ffrr is power hungry as i am sure we all know, but i am sure i could have got it up to and maybe beyond 100a if i had turned everything on, no wonder the alternators fail or rather the diode packs on the alternator with what would seem to be rather more frequently than we would like, or what would be considered an acceptable failure rate, i strongly suspect JLR have used parts which are not up to the job really
once its out of warranty and if the diode pack fails again i will construct my own using higher duty rated components, problem solved Thumbs Up 2011 4.4 tdv8 autobiography black
