Hello all,

i have a little problem on my TD6 MY06. Last week i stopped at the groverys, got back in the car
and turned key in igniition, tried to start and wooosh - lights out, power gone. i jumped out to check
any loose cable at the battery, nothing. i tried again and vola, it started without issues.

today the same thing but i waited in the car, after some seconds the power is back and i was able to start.
a thing i noticed, i had to recalibrate steering and the fm stations where gone so it looks like the car lost
the power like you switch off a bulb.

battery is new, maybe faulty? ignition switch on its way out?
anyone a idea where to start? i dont want to be nowhere with a non starting car :O

I would check your battery connections are clean and tight as I had a problem that appeared to be a flat battery but was a poor connection although tight I had to clean inside the battery connection with coarse emery cloth.
Check battery voltage with engine off and running, should be 12.5 and 14.5 volts approx.
There is a recent thread that tells you what fuses to check, if you have 12.5 volts with engine off, you should have the same voltage at the fuses fed by the ignition switch at either position 1, 2 or crank.
I’ll try and find the thread but if you download the Rave Manual circuit diagrams it will tell you what fuses to test which will tell you if your ignition switch is starting to fail.
The other issue could be starter motor solenoid and plugging into diagnostics may give you an idea but you might just have a poor connection or Earth strap somewhere

my starter motor was quietly failing and i had lots of issues like this that seemed to be low battery.
then it stranded me at work.
got a second hand BMW X5 starter motor and now it turns over and starts up wonderfully.

It sounds similar to the TD6 I worked on that had a faulty ignition switch but the thread below goes through a few things to check, methodical testing with a multimeter is the key in my opinion?

Shame on me, i think the earth connection was a bit loose 😱 But i thank everyone fot the answers!
If the problem is still there i will report back!
