Looking forward to picking up my 2011 Autobiography this coming Thursday so today I visited my LR Indy to seek his advice on a few issues. I asked for a quote to fit a fixed towbar and electrics and he asked if it had Adaptive Dynamics, or I think that was what he said. Anyway I had no problems with my D3 and D4 but they had all the electrics fitted etc. so should I expect the RR to present something more complicated? I only tow a small touring van. Any advice will be very welcome.

We have a 2011MY Vogue and she came with active dynamics and a tow preparation. Some info came from the selling dealer and some from the build sheet which I obtained from vindecoderz web site.

Search under your VIN and it should tell you if tow preparation was fitted. The socket for the tow bar electrics will then be found in the spare wheel well, nearside rear bulkhead. It's grey IIRC. This should allow plug and play to the tow bar and trailer.

My understanding is that the active dynamics will continue to operate, but the suspension may prevented from raising to off road height if selected. I assume that prevents grounding of the rear of the trailer in certain conditions. (members, please correct if required)

I went the route of a Westphalia (original fitment if ordered with the car) detachable with 13 pin electrics and that was simply install and drive away with the tin tent attached. Can be done DIY if you wish, but the bumper comes off for the work. I would suggest you go 13 pin as the socket will take an adapter for the older twin T&S plugs.

Some good info on the P F Jones website, drawings, fitting details and electrics, good for research, but DO shop around and make your own decision on supplier/installer.

The main thing to bear in mind is that the towbar and electrics will work fine if you just plug and play...

But to get the best from it, including the suspension working with the engine to reduce the chances of the trailer wagging as you go along, you need to have the car coded to know it's got a towbar.

The car will know if a trailer is attached if the trailer's globes are incandescent or if load resistors are fitted to the trailer's blinker circuits. The CCF parameter is purely a build notation as to whether or not a trailer socket loom was fitted.

Manual height changes are still available but some auto height changes such as auto selecting off-road height when in rock crawl are inhibited. Auto lowering from off-road height at speed still occurs though.

But none of that is specific to later cars with Adaptive Dynamics, is it?

So I’m still not sure how the adaptive dampers affect towing. Intrigued now....

Perhaps someone suggested having adaptive dynamics might be an advantage if towing, with which I would agree.

I doubt that active dampers need to be told that a trailer is attached as they react to movement of the suspension and the vehicle as a whole, let alone that trailer weight can vary from a few hundred kg to 3.5T for the RR.

No idea why the tow bar people would ask if it’s got adaptive dynamics then. Interesting......

Following your link to vindercoderz.com I opened the build sheet for my vehicle and it clearly states on the second line: 'Towing Equipment - 7 Pin X Bar Detach Tow Ball (02BCC)'. Spoke with the dealer who insisted that there is NO towing equipment on the vehicle as was proved when I was viewing it. As he is the UK's largest L322 used RR (The Vogue Centre) I think I'll take his word. He explained that the original owners may have changed their mind and it was a not uncommon issue.

This is as fitted on mine. The socket is the left hand half, with its loom covered with the same material as the remainder of the main loom. The cable to the trailer socket goes to the right.

If you have the left hand half (socket) fine, it’s plug and play. If you don’t, that’s another story and I would have to research how to go about installing one. It may be that others here have done it and can assist.
