Servicing rear brake calipers 2011 model

I have been searching for a thread that might help me strip down, clean and free up my rear brake calipers, but not found a good β€œhow to β€œ guide.

I have done the front pads etc with no problems, but would like to do the rears once the weather improves.

Any β€œtips” appreciated.

Just contemplating the same thing.

I have a sticking rear caliper aswell. cleaned both calipers up approx 18 months ago, when I fitted new pads & discs.
Reading through posts & other people having issues with Non OE calipers. I'm thinking about getting a second hand unit & rebuilding it, then like you fit it when the weather improves.

Anyone else fully rebuilt their rear calipers or just purchased new ones. Whistle

Just so your aware, both cars above have completely different types of rear callipers...

Late cars have much less issues with rear callipers than the 02-10MY cars...

Highroller, i would simply replace yours as rebuilt rear callipers are cheaper than the time and effort it costs to rebuild yours! And the parts maybe from an unknown quality Thumbs Up

Thanks Craig Thumbs Up
Mine is really preventive maintenance , to clean off any road salt/ grit etc. and hopefully grease up the sliding pins, but I have worries about affecting the EPB , which seems tricky ?
I have got new pads ready to fit, but when I checked them last month they are still only half worn.

Cheers Craig, Probably best to obtain a new caliper. Considering the effort / cleaning I went through last time.

Mike, if you are changing only rear pads and not rear disks you will not be touching EPB. changed mine rear pads this spring and it is straightforward job. Thumbs Up 2012 TDV8 Black Edition

Thanks Nino,
Did you clean and grease the sliding pins at the same time ?
That is my plan.
Cheers

yes I have. used Textar brake lube. can't remember when squeezing pistons in if it is necessary to twist them at the same time. 2012 TDV8 Black Edition

I think the pistons just press in.

I need to strip mine too as they have developed a bit of a squeak. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I've just had to replace both of my rears. One of them seized completely (bit irritating as I had just had the disks and pads replaced and they were apparently fine then as 'they know what to look out for') and I had the other one replaced as a precaution.

As far as I know, they did all the typical preventative maintenance when they did the disks and yet this one still seized 2 months later. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

One thing missed on that video would be to pull the sliders out of the calliper bracket clean them & refit using the appropriate grease... I would also grease the disc securing bolt... And finally, if your going to that much trouble, why not paint the outside of the disc? He's clearly painted the bells, why not the outer edge?

Just my 2 peneth Whistle Thumbs Up

It was Thomas Cook flight this year, but we usually use Jet2 .
We were very lucky to get away on time because Manchester was closed for a few hours the following day whilst they cleared the runway and de-iced the planes.
Beautiful here at the moment though, 24c and unusually, virtually no wind.😎😎
