Hi folks,

I am trying to diagnose a rattle coming from the engine for quite some time. It's a MY11 FF 5.0 Supercharged with 76K miles on the clock. A rattling coming from the engine, if you get closer to the front grille it's more audible but seems like the noise is coming from the entire engine, maybe a little bit more from the left hand side. The truck sounds like a diesel at idle. No powerloss at high revs, the car runs great. But the noise at idle is annoying. I had this car for almost a year and I had different V8's before, so I know that a V8 should be a smooth running motor at idle.

Recently I have changed the drive belt tensioner and the primary drive belt but didn't help. So I am wondering if it's a bad supercharged noise or a timing chain related issue.

My local Land Rover workshop where they are really experienced in RR's and the official Land Rover dealer-workshop couldn't diagnose it properly. Just my local one said it could be the timing chain but their not sure either.

So I am attaching a video which I recorded today to give you guys some idea of the sound.

I have just listened to your video , the noise you are hearing is the vanes of the supercharger compressor bouncing off each other (roots style) due to bearing failure.

In the SC Range Rover is normally the bearings in the nose assembly of the Super Charger i have looked at a few like this , they are Eaton Super Chargers and you can get repair kits for them from well known internet sites, the bearings from memory are blind bearings but can be removed with a drift and grease in the old fashioned way of hydraulic driving.

You will have the Eaton M122 Charger fitted

Thank you for your help. A close friend of mine who has MY06 4.2 SC had a supercharger problem, he bought this repair kit and have done all the necessary job, but it didn't sort the problem. His problem was a little different to be exact, his supercharger was making a noise like the blades were hitting a metal in supercharger assembly. So he had to buy a new SC and now it runs fine. But I know the two SC's are different.

I came across with this repair kit, is it something to do with the issue you are talking about?

My local RR service guy told me the part number should be LR088564 if this is the one to be fixed. (the ad states 088514, I guess it's for L405)

That link is for the whole nose assembly, you dont need that , you just need the FULL repair kit as that has the bearings for the rotors as well

I'm not convinced this is a supercharger problem - in my experience, supercharger noises are more of a random clattering as the teeth of the supercharger chatter together as it runs down. This more constant noise sounds more like the dreaded timing chain tensioners to me.

To try and help isolate the problem you can briefly remove the supercharger belt and run the engine up and see if the noise goes away.

hey folks, here is an update on the situation

First we took out the supercharger belt and let the engine run but the rattle was still there. So it was obvious that my timing chain guides and the tensioners were dead! At the same time we checked the supercharger pulley and seemed like it was slowly reaching end of its life span.

So I wanted to change both timing chain guide rails and the tensioners along with the supercharger snout.

And yesterday we finished the work and yes! now the car runs smooth as silk! I can't tell how happy I am.

A big thanks to my workshop, Anil Auto, especially to Turgut who is the owner and he helped me a lot through this process.

So here is some photos, you guys could see the damaged guides that causes the rattle and the supercharger snout. And yes, I wanted to have a pic of Turgut also to commemorate this moment!
