Gearbox history

Hi guys

How can I trace the history on my gearbox?

I found this plate (in very good condition) whilst carrying out an oil flush on it yesterday.

How would I find out the year of manufacture or any other history on it?

The 3 means it’s a 2003 model year unit

The G below the 3 means it’s the 5L40 family. A 5L50 would have the letter Z

XG is the alpha code for the L322. The BMW E53 with the M57 engine, for example, has the alpha codes XF and XW

96024237 is the GM part number for the transmission

Q01 is the calibration code (i.e. 2001 spec.)

The TCM box would give the week of remanufacture if the transmission was a genuine factory reconditioned unit and, in that case, the ‘Q’ would have been an ‘R’ followed by the year of re-manufacture

The serial number is a sequential number. You can see in the photo above that my example was a much earlier unit with a s/n of 714,599 whereas yours is 1,663,649

Phil

If you get hold of the 'build sheet' for your FF (should be able to get it from any LR Dealer, though they may charge a small fee) you will be able to find out from the g/box serial number whether the gearbox is originally from your FF or has come as a replacement unit.
