4.4 TDV8 engine shut off on motorway

Had a bit of a scary moment today. I was cruising at about 70mph on the German Autobahn in the second lane when the engine suddenly shut off and took the power steering and electrics (at least all internal displays) with it. I managed to thread the car between two articulated lorries and roll onto the hard shoulder. The hazard lights still worked.

Thinking I would not be able to go any further I put the car in park then realised I couldn't get it out of park again. Although the engine was off the ignition power was still on as if the engine was still running. I switched it off but to my surprise as I switched the ignition on again the engine started and I was able to continue to work. This was the first time this had happened to me with this car. (I used to have the 3.6 TDV8 and that died on me once but that was terminal as the alternator had fried.)

On the way home I monitored the battery voltage in the hidden diagnostics screen and it remained at a steady 14.5 volts:

The DTC code screen lists several fault codes. I assume they are ordered oldest to newest from top to bottom:

The last code U300317 states that the battery voltage is above the threshold:

The battery was newly installed last July.

The code next to it U210A85 states that a module is over temperature and that the MOST FOT temperature should be checked:

On the vehicle signals screen (top photo) the MOST FOT temperature had reached 38 degrees Centigrade by the time I got home. It rose by a degree every couple of minutes on my way home. Is this normal temperature and what does FOT mean? The code description doesn't mention what a normal value might be.

When the engine shut off I had the heating on automatic at about 22 degrees and was also listening to music via the AUX input. I wasn't using the seat or steering wheel heater. My commute is about 25 minutes and the outside temperature was about 8 degrees.

The previous fault codes I think are a lot older as the seem to correlate to issues I have had in the past. I guess the dealer never cleared them.

Anyone else know what might have caused the engine to shut down like this? 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

According to the dealer none of the error codes were related to the issue. They detected that the fuel filter was causing insufficient fuel pressure to the engine so the filter was replaced (last replacement was just over 18 months ago). They also regenerated the particle filter. They sure used a lot of fuel to do that. It went in with over 3/4 of a tank and came out with just under half... 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black

hi mate, not sure if this relates to your much newer vehicle, but I had a similar issue, which after a bit of digging turned out to be the XYZ switch losing connection and turning the engine off. The short term fix was to move the gear selector back and forth enabling the car to start and drive off again.
Like I said, similar, catastrophic failure but not sure if you have the same kind of switch?

Not sure about the switch. The selector itself is the rotary variety that raises up when you switch the engine on. However, once the engine is switched off it lowers into the center console so you don't have the option to move it back and forth. 2012 Vogue 4.4 TDV8 automatic (LHD), Santorini Black
