Howto: Diesel Leak Off Test on the cheap

Having failed in solving my "chatatatata" starting problem: GlowPlugs

I turned my attention to the injectors, following the advice I chose to ignore Embarassed

eBay provided a couple of 90 degree connectors and some leak off pipe and blanks

I provided a coke bottle with a suitably sized hole in the top.

I recommend you get a couple of 90 degree and a couple of 180 degree connectors

in advance, they are quite brittle as many have found

Insert one connector to leak off pipe, insert other end of pipe into coke bottle lid and screw onto bottle loosely (so not airtight)

1. Car in access height (for access) bonnet up
2. Remove plenum chamber for easier access to the rear of engine
3. Remove engine covers (3) and rubbery plasticy thing over injector wiring
4. Undo three male torx bolts securing injector wiring
5. Starting at No. 1 injector (same procedure for others, just more fiddly!)
6. Pull off circlip with long nosed pliers and put somewhere safe!
7. Gently pull up or lever up with jaws of 12 or 13 mm spanner the leak off connector (you can get a fine screwdriver in between the top of the injector and the connector to help it out)
8. Fiddly bit now, you need to blank off the end of the connector you just pulled off, I used one of the blanks, warmed and stretched on No.1 but had to find something else (some air con pipe, the other 90 degree connector and a blank) for the others. Make sure this is well sealed or you can end up with diesel everywhere!
9. Connect your leak off tester to the injector and push down, refit the circlip if you want.
10. Coke bottle nestled nicely under the coolant tank.
11. Start car (check for leaks, if any switch off and fix) and then run for about 30 seconds
12. Measure amount of diesel that has "leaked off"

Repeat for other injectors.

My results:

1. 50ml
2. 05ml
3. 00ml
4. 25ml
5. 00ml
6. 00ml

So it looks like 1 & 4 are blocked and require replacement/refurbishment.

Whether it is quicker to remove the whole lot and use six bottles I don't know, but this worked for me for no more than a £5. .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember Wink

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Ipanema Sand

Did this last week - thanks Joe for the really helpful guide Very Happy

I bought one of the brass t-piece replacement kits off e-bay so I didn't have to worry about breaking any of the plastic bits and it also gave me the spares I needed to do the test.

This is how I did my sequence with a few more pics added to Joe's description:
1. Unclipped the hose t-piece from No 1 and replaced with the right angle piece from the new kit

2. Cut a spare piece of tube and connected it to the outlet of the t-piece on No.2 then used a bit of brake pipe and some fuel pipe clips to connect this to the return pipe that had originally been connected to the t-piece on No.1 . This is important as if you don't complete the circuit and give the returns from the other injectors somewhere to go you will leak diesel everywhere (guess how I know Embarassed ). You can then connect a pipe from the right angle t-piece in No1 to your chosen receptacle and run the test.

3. Once you have done No.1. you can then move your right angle t-piece and pipe to No.2 and use you spare pipe to connect to the outlet of No.3 but instead of connecting it to the return pipe you fit a new t-piece to No.1 connect it to this and connect the return pipe back to its original position on No.1. as well

Doing it this way you can work your way along the injectors and keep using you right angle t-piece until you get to No.6 where it will stay.

All you need as special equipment is the brass kit (complete with pipe) and a bit of brake pipe (or similar) and some fuel clips which you only use for the first injector.

Hope that makes sense Smile

Cheers,

United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Vogue Td6 Java Black

I did this last night but with a kit.
I removed all the T pieces from the top of the injectors and left the hoses all attached to them so they came away as one.
I'd read about people snapping them etc. and did notice the hoses were very brittle where the met the T pieces
Then i just blank the open outlet of each T.
did save me the hassle of breaking anything without any spares!
