I know Range Rovers are money pits and I ran a TD6 for 10 years which involved constantly doing something to it to keep it running.
I decided to get a newer one as I was getting tired of spending my time off fixing the TD6. I looked around for a decent TDV8 and found what I thought was a good one.
I’m now thinking I’ve made a mistake. Although it has relatively low mileage and full service history it hasn’t made it fault free
The fluttering noise I can hear now appears from research to be a leaking exhaust manifold. I dread to think what that will cost. It doesn’t look a DIY job.
I bought this car as I didn’t want to mess anymore I just wanted a reliable car that I could get in and drive with a smile on my face but it just seems like I’m back to square one again having to get the spanners out.
It also makes a loud diesel rattle on acceleration. My TD6 wasn’t this bad. That I’m told could be down to a dodgy remap that has simply advanced the timing. That needs confirming. I don’t recall the other 3 TDV8s I test drove being this audible.
I’m getting 20mpg average on a run.
It drives lovely but I’m on edge all the time thinking something’s about to go bang.

Hi Andy,

I too am in a similar predicament as I too feel like I can't trust my 2007 Tdv8. I also have the fluttering noise when on light boost. This may not be down to the exhaust manifold, although it's very likely. It could be due to a split hose near the turbo which I think can be accessed through the wheel arch. I've ordered some new boost hoses for them and will fit next weekend will let you know if there is any difference.

Yeah that will probably accentuate it. Mine is needing changed (NS) but reading up on the job, I'm going to wait until I get my vehicle lift installed  Cam

2011 TDV8 Vogue in Stornoway Grey

I fitted two silicone top hoses a couple of weeks ago and I thought I’d sorted the restricted performance message and the mpg seemed to improve. Sadly, 5 days later it faulted again.

I can go days without a fault then it’ll go again. I have started using the Auto trip meter as the average fuel on A and B seemed to stick at 17. Now each trip I make is reset using the Auto and I’m seeing 24mpg around town so I’m not sure how accurate the A and B trip meters are.

The diesel rattle continues under load and I’m still trying to find the fluttering noise which is best described as a rattlesnake. I have recorded it and if I can work out how to upload it here I will. 2010 MY Vogue SE TDV8 3.6 Stornoway Grey- fully loaded
