Hi appj62.

I wouldn't go the 4.2 as it's too old but, the 5.0 does have a certain attraction Wink

Never say never!

All good points made above. I would just add that work out what kind of journeys you will usr it for.
A remapped 3.6 with egr deleted ( as I have) will do lots of short journeys and not have the DPF issues a 4.4 has.

The turbo drain mod in my view is essential. Oil builds up in the second turbo that only spins up above 2500 rpm which in normal driving can be never! Teh first time you overtake someone or give the beans the scene behind will be something out of a James Bond movie. The smoke can be so dense as to be dangerous. The drain mod gives an independent line back to the sump for each turbo stopping the back pressure building up and oil leaking into the second turbo. Not all 4.4's do it mine definitely did, if you drive round continually like a boy racer no problem, do sedate driving for 10 or 15 miles and then open it up oh dear, not good.
I was sceptical the drain mod would cure it, Green Oval garage knew all about it, assured me it would and it really has sorted it.

They don't all suffer with this issue though - Mine hasn't had the mod done and never has any problem with smoke. 2010 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

I came to fatty ownership from a Touareg and have just had the pleasure of towing my 2 tonne caravan for the first time. It used less fuel than my Touareg 32 mog plus around town and an amazing 25.2 mpg towing. There’s something special about doing the legal limit with the 2 tonne van on its back at a leisurely 1200 rpm. I can’t speak for the 3.6, I was advised the 4.4 was superior in many ways and I feel this was good advice. If you go the 4.4 route make sure the turbo drain mod has been done or budget £1000 or so to get it done.

Turbo Drain Mod you say?

Hi AJGalaxy2012

Thanks mate, thats a good shout regarding the turbo drain and I'mm assuming that that is the cause of the common oil leak on the 4.4?

1200 rpm is just about ticking over Smile

The turbo drain mod and the oil leaks in the V are different items. The drain mod provides an extra drain direct to the sump to overcome oil build-up in the inlet tract if the turbo isn't exercised regularly and the oil leak is from the oil cooler gaskets and/or the O-ring at the back of the oil cooler.
