Looking to buy [when I can find the 'one'] a 2010-2012 TDV8 4.4.
We have a twin axle Bailey caravan & wondered if anyone has any comments towing with an ultra low raving 8 speed 'box compared to, say, an normal 5 speed or 6 speed box.
My fear is, towing at 60mph on the motorway, will she be going up & down the gears like a fiddlers elbow?
I have an X5 at present & she's pretty sorted at 60mph with only a few hills that requires dropping down a gear.

Any comments greatly appreciated.

Tow a Sterling Eccles 580 with my 4.4 tdv8, ULW 1362kg. Is absolutely effortless left alone will normally be in 7th gear at 50 but will pull 8th at 60 sometimes just need to manually change up! Furl consumption towing is circa 24 mpg v 30 solo.
That much torque that you don’t know the van is there. Mine had tow bar and 13 pin electrics fitted when I got it soo not sure if they have any mods but the led lights on van work fine just don’t get the trailer advice fir indicators that I get with a trailer I have with “normal” bulbs.
Gear changes are so smooth you don’t notice them, normally just leave it in drive, haven’t towed very far in sport mode to see if that improves mpg.
Best tow car I have ever had, no bounce or jerking and good visibility of course. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

2000Kg Bailey Senator Wyoming twin axle with all the weight upgrades etc. I used to tow with a 3.0 V6 Touareg and thought that was good (it was). The 4.4 TDV8 old fatty is in a different league altogether, the gearbox is a gem, doesnt hunt gears and as V8 Bob said 7 th gear until mid 50's and then 8th, up hill, downhill no problem at all. Hi, I have a large Vanmaster heavier than most tow`s it well and deliver`s very good mpg I too came out of a VW 3.0 and that did the job but not as comfortable as the FFRR

I had a hunch it would be ok, just needed reassuring the low revving engine didn't hinder towing.
Got the 'van just the need fatty to go with it.............and still looking.
OCD with colour-interior-owners-tyres-history.....the list goes on, one will turn up at some point.

I bought my Fatty 3 years ago with 90k with not much history then set about replacing all the fluids, brake pads etc even with full history you can still have some things to replace? a 2012 car now is 7 years old if you want something reliable buy a walking stick? cars brake down its only to be expected. Mine has not let me down yet, that's why we buy insurance AA RAC Green flag etc, Look for a car that you feel good with It will do all you ask in towing your Tin tent and will get you there in comfort.

I did nearly 45,000 miles towing 2000kg vans and never had a single problem, got about 19mpg.

Now changed to a 3litre Velar and it tows very well and getting 21mpg.

I towed my 2000kg Buccaneer with the 4.4 and it was no bother at all, to be honest the 3.6 was good too! These cars have so much low down grunt you just don’t notice anything behind them. I used to keep it in sports mode so it hangs on to gears a bit longer and use the paddles as well. You just knock it down to 7th or even 6th if you feel it struggling a bit.
