Starter Motor Click

So it has started to make the dreaded click when trying to start....immediately after a 500 mile round trip partly in torrential rain. Have read the wiper trick but at the moment is starting on second attempt of the button.

Two questions for those in the know:

How long o you expect it to keep starting albeit not at the first go?
Would you replace with an original LR starter or a Bitoart one?

If & when my goes, I would favour taking the starter out & see if someone can do an old fashioned 'refurb'. I'm not a fan of 'reconditioned' units from your local motor factors.
Luckily, in deepest rural Suffolk, we have a time warp electro workshop with steam powered [not really] lathes & oily covered machinery where the guy refurbs back to better than original. Unfortunately, these kind of places are getting harder to find. 2012 Orkney Grey Westminster 4.4TDV8 with Ivory interior.........nice!

IIRC Mike (Baltic Blue) looked into refurb with a similar type of guy.
Answer was no after he opened it up.
Can't remember why.

Have a search, or Mike if you're reading was that right?

. Cheers, Greg

I thought of the refurb way then phoned around most places wanted to sell with a return of the old unit which happened to be more money than Opie Oils and Its the same make model as Dan Duckworths also did not have to send the old unit back Just my take on what I found out.

Your looking for a Denso unit

As far as refurb goes the parts that get burned and blackened are the high current contacts in the solenoid. Unfortunately you can't buy replacements although it is possible to clean them up but I doubt that would last very long.

I eventually replaced my starter motor and it was fine for a while but is beginning to be unreliable again.

Other things to try are to take the load off the steering lock by turning the steering wheel slightly.

I find locking the doors seems to help for some reason and also the windscreen wiper trick if all else fails.

I read somewhere that the click could be the sound of the turbo actuator rather than the solenoid but I don't know how that helps. Confused 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Replacement solenoid contacts are not available
The only way to do a refurb is to strip and rebuild when the contacts have been cleaned.
Mike.
