Caravan wiring

My caravan has 2 plugs obviously Black for lights indicators etc and a grey one, I only have 1 socket on the car for the Black one, my question is what would be needed to utilise the ancillary grey one? Would it need a auto electrician to wire in?

if it is its power to the van
if your towing vehicle is 12v, then its 12v
it needs a wire from the batter through a fuse and an earth wire
hope this helps RR 2005 4.4 petrol

The grey one is normally to power the fridge while on the move & also to run a live charging wire to the 12v system on the caravan. You would need a couple of live wires from a reliable source & an earth. It is 'do-able' but............
Personally, I would have the car converted to a new type 13 pin socket then run an adaptor, in years to come if you upgrade your caravan that has a 13 pin plug you're already sorted. Decent auto-electrician should do that blindfold.

If you convert a 7 pin plug to a 13 pin plug, it becomes a MOT testable item I believe, whereas a 7 pin isn't

I'd heard that towbars were part of the test but I hadn't heard of the electrics.
Found this on the DVLA website, no mention of electrics.

Personally, I would buy a "vehicle specific" electric kit which may very well be plug and play.

Rather than faff around with adaptors get a 2 x 7-pin socket kit.

Many people find them OK but I've always had issues with the 13-pin units.

& to confirm - the 13-pin are an MOT testable item whereas the 7-pin are not (unless they are hanging loose for example). 2003 Range Rover Vogue TD6

Just done a google search and...…

Caravan and trailer electrical socket test
The change which may have the biggest effect on campers and caravanners is the new tests for towbar electrical sockets.
There will be a basic security/damage check of 7-pin sockets, but
13-pin sockets will be subject to a full electrical connectivity check and incorrectly connected or inoperative circuits will result in failure.

So a 7 pin socket that doesn't work properly is OK as long as its not structurally broken, but a 13 pin socket must electrically work properly on all the pins and is tested. You can buy a 13 pin MOT approved socket tester quite easily on line.
Best wishes
