4.4 TDV8 starter motor or battery...

Hi chaps,

Jumped in the Westie tonight to head to the supermarket and the car went to start as normal but instead of firing up I just got a ‘clunk’ I suspect the starter motor. I tried a couple more times to no avail, oddly though, the clock (both analogue and TFT gauge) reset themselves, the date winding back to 2009.

We live in the middle of nowhere and I’ve not got a code reader.

Does this sound like a failing battery or starter? All sorts of other faults were thrown up on the dash, such as gearbox fault.

Car ran beautifully over the weekend. Is there anything I can do to get going if it is the starter?

Thanks! 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

The clock resetting indicates a loss of battery power. Check that the battery terminals are clean and tight.

Sounds like total battery drain resetting all electrics, if it was starter it is normally corrosion on terminals in solenoid causing a failure to power the starter. If it is the starter it normally starts after a few attempts ( at first at least ) I would charge battery and see if that effects a cure. If it is the battery you need an 019 AGM replacement. Some people get away without using a IId tool to advise the car it has a new battery. 2012 tdv8 Westminster arrived Jan 19 gone Dec 23

Thank you very much chaps.

She is currently on charge, whilst we dust off the back-up car.

Terminals are perfect, zero corrosion.

I pray it’s just a battery!

I’ll report back any updates. 2012 4.4 TDV8 Westminster - Baltic Blue, Jet interior

Well, it does appear to have been the battery.

After an hour or so of charging Westie fired up immediately and ran sweetly.

I’ll be monitoring it and will replace if needed.

It seems to be battery silly season. Wifes fatty battery died on Sunday (looks like it's the original as well, so it hasn't done badly) so getting that replaced. Then, whilst fiddling with radio tuning on my newly picked up fatty, it decided to shut everything down due to insufficient power. Drives:
