GU10 Compact Flourescent lamp

Help/advice needed please.

We have four of these lights in the ceiling of our loft, which we lined and insulated to create a home office about 12 years ago. One has just failed and my local trusted electrical shop doesn’t sell them and they suggested Screwfix. Screwfix sell GU10 fittings, but only as LEDs.

My simple question is, can I plug an LED straight in or does it need a new ceiling fitting?

Thanks

Andy

My bathroom ceiling fan/light came with GU10 CFLs. I replaced them with GU10 LEDs a couple of years back. They plugged straight in.

How is the lamp retained in the fitting? In mine, the lamps were fitted from the rear and retained by a couple of coil springs stretched across the back of the lamp Ron B. VK2OTC

It's 240v so any GU10 bulb should work - LED or ortherwise.

It is a long unit though - standard GU10's are a good bit shorter if that matters ?

They are cheap enough these days so I'd be inclined to replace all 4 together.

If there's no transformer to them. then they are 240v it's a straight swap as Alistair says including LEDs. Current: FF Westminster money pit

Thanks all, that’s very helpful. Off to Screwfix I go!

Yes, mine mount from the rear with a floating GU10 socket so length wasn't an issue. If the socket is fixed to the lighting fixture, then it may be a problem. Ron B. VK2OTC

All sorted. New bulbs slotted straight in and are retained in the same fixing bracket. 5 bulbs cost £8.99, so cheaper than I was expecting.

You will find a spring on top which holds the lamp in place which is too tall for gu10

Will run a lot cooler than the CF bulbs too.

LED lights are great, just did our house with all LED bulbs, and all lights switched on (over 100 bulbs) draws less than 600w!

As opposed to 5Kw for the same in old fashioned bulbs! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

For the record, the only concern would be a dimmer switch. Due to low wattage, special dimmers are needed to drive LED lamps. Varilight Pro LED dimmers are exceptionally good in my experience. L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

Or you can get dimmable LEDS, the sales specs should say if they are dimmable or not.
Usually dimmable are a few pounds more than non dimmable
